Chapter 139 Makeup Emergency

Getting ready for an awards show when she was nominated was far different than getting ready for one she was just attending to be able to say she was there or to support friends, at least in Andrea’s experience.

Kelsey had arranged for her hair dresser to come to Andrea’s apartment to do her hair. She had a professional stylist come over to make sure the dress fit perfectly. Perhaps best of all, Stephon had come to do her makeup. Andrea was so glad to have the best makeup artist she’d ever worked with in her own home getting her ready for what was sure to be one of the biggest nights of her life.

The stylist had her hair done. It looked gorgeous, curled and piled up on the top of her head, though more to the left than centered, with curls cascading down in tendrils that framed her face. She had never worn it that way before but loved it. The clips the stylist had used to keep her hair in place were black with a glittery finish. The earrings she planned to wear were similar—diamonds with black surrounding them. She also had a matching necklace and bracelet. None of those were on yet when someone came to the door while Stephon was halfway through her makeup.

Kelsey came into the room, a distressed look on her face. “So sorry to interrupt you, but… it’s Sarah.”

“Sarah?” She could hardly believe her ears. “What in the world is she doing here?”

“Uh… I think you should come and take a look.”

Not sure if she should be afraid or intrigued, Andrea followed her assistant to the apartment door. It was closed, but she could hear sobbing coming from the other side. She was glad Kelsey hadn’t let Sarah inside the apartment without her there. Even though Sarah had been on her best behavior lately, Andrea wasn’t sure she trusted her.

Before Andrea pulled open the door, she made sure the silk robe she was wearing covered her underclothing, just in case someone was walking by and for Sarah’s sake. “Sarah? What’s going on?”

“Oh, thank God you let me in!” her half-sister said, covering her face with both hands as she barged through the door. She was wearing a beautiful white gown that caught the light and shimmered, almost the opposite of the gown Andrea was about to put on. The fact that her “evil” half-sister would be wearing white while she would be wearing black didn’t escape her. “Is Stephon here?”

“Yes, but… what’s going on?”

With her hands still over her face, Sarah said, “I picked the wrong makeup artist. Apparently, Janice hates me!”

“Why do you say that?” Andrea wanted to know.

“You’ll laugh at me!” Sarah exclaimed, her hands still covering her face.

“No, I won’t.” Andrea hoped she could keep that promise. She tried to pretend Sarah was someone she liked, like her mother or her other sister, so that when she pulled her hands away, she could be empathetic or maybe even angry about whatever it was she was so upset about.

Slowly, Sarah pulled her hands away from her face. As she did so, a ghastly sight was revealed. Her eyes were painted in thick, blue eye shadow. Her lashes were long, and the black eyeliner she was wearing made her look like a raccoon. Her cheeks were a bright scarlet, and the lipstick smeared all over her mouth was a dark burgundy color. None of it matched, but put together, she looked garish to say the least. “Oh, Sarah….” Andrea wasn’t sure what else to say. “I hope Stephon can help.”

“What am I going to do? This isn’t regular makeup! It won’t just wash off! I don’t know what she used, but… I look hideous!”

“It’s not that bad.” Andrea knew she was lying, but she was trying to make her feel better, in case Stephon couldn’t do anything.

Thinking of him must’ve summoned him as the makeup artist came into the room. “Andrea are you coming ba—oh, my God, Sarah, you look hideous!”

“I know!” Sarah started sobbing again, covering her face with her hands. “Can you help me?”

“Girl, I’m a miracle worker, but I’m not God.”

“Please! Stephon! There’s got to be something you can do! I knew I shouldn’t have believed her when Janice said it was all water under the bridge! That stupid b*tch!”

“Okay, okay. Just calm down. I’ll see what I can do. You should probably take that dress off, though. I don’t want to ruin it. Andrea, do you have a robe or something she can borrow? I’ll put something on your face to see how much of that will come off. Then, I’ve got to get Andrea done.”

“I have a robe she can borrow,” Andrea nodded, and Kelsey went off to get it.

“Oh, thank you, Stephon! Thank you so much!” Sarah lunged at him as if she might kiss him, but he pulled back.

“Just… go with Kelsey. I’ll be there in a minute.”

The nightmare disappeared down the hall, and Stephon shook his head. “She should’ve never asked Janice to do her face. After what she did to her—no way she’d let that go.”

“What did she do?” Andrea wanted to know.

Smirking, Stephon said, “I don’t know all of the details, but Sarah put some sort of itching powder in all of Janice’s expensive makeup so that everyone on the entire set of the epic movie she was working on at the time, Lands Before the Sun, broke out in an awful rash. They had to shut down filming for weeks while the stars’ faces recovered.”

“Shut up!” Andrea said. “I’d heard about that but I had no idea Sarah was involved. Why did she do that?”

He shrugged. “Janice says it’s because she made Sarah’s eyeliner a little crooked before an important event the year before, but who knows?”

“Well, we need to hurry if you’re going to get her face done before she has to leave. I hope she brought her own car because I’m forgiving to a point, but I’m not walking the red carpet with her, even if she looks stunning.”

“Girl, I don’t blame you. You’re a lot more forgiving than I would be.” Stephon headed back to Andrea’s bathroom, and she followed, hoping everything worked out for Sarah, even if she did deserve some of the payback that had just come her way. She was finally trying to be nicer. It would be a shame if something like this suddenly sent her into a tailspin, and she lost all the ground she’d recently made up.
