Chapter 42 Who's Lying Now?

Myles Randolph had been Andrea’s agent for years. He was a busy man who handled lots of different stars, so it took him a while to get back to her. By then, Andrea was home. She’d taken a bath, trying to relax, and talked to Case. The episode hadn’t aired yet, but it would the next week. She wanted him to be prepared. Case was more concerned with her than he was himself and had done his best to calm her down. But when her agent phoned, Andrea felt her anger surging again.

“I’m sorry, Andrea. I didn’t know she’d had the contract modified.”

“Isn’t it your job to know that?” Andrea fired back.

“Sure, but I didn’t look at it that closely. It’s freaking Dyan Dudson, for crying out loud. It sounds like you handled yourself very well.”

“That’s not the point! I was caught off-guard! I could’ve made a fool out of myself!”

“But you didn’t. Look, I’ll give them a call, make sure they know we don’t appreciate their underhandedness. I’ll be sure it doesn’t happen again, but for now, just get ready for your popularity to soar, Andrea. You were just on the most popular talk show in America!”

“Daytime talk show,” she corrected, rolling her eyes. She wasn’t ready to let this go, but it seemed like there was nothing else she could do for now. “Fine, Myles. Just… be more careful next time.”

“Of course. I apologize.”

Andrea said goodbye and hung up. She had the feeling Myles had known about this and didn’t tell her because he wanted her to go on the show so badly, and he knew she wouldn’t go if she knew about the questions. Still fuming, she folded her arms and stared out the window for a moment.

Her living room had a lovely view of downtown. She normally loved looking at the tall buildings and the beautiful sky beyond them. It made her feel alive, like she was in the heart of something big. Right now, she just wanted to go home to Wisconsin, to the peace and solace of her mother’s country home, to walk out in the woods, to lose herself in her thoughts and the wonderous white snow.

The sky was overcast, and it made her nervous. One of the reasons she liked it so much in California was because there weren’t that many thunderstorms. She hated thunder and lightning. It hadn’t always been that way. When she was younger, she’d loved storms. The rain always seemed to renew her spirit. But then, tragedy had struck one stormy summer day, and now, she could hardly handle a storm of any proportion. It had taken years of counseling for her to hide her fear from others, but on stormy nights, Andrea didn’t sleep. If it stormed during the daytime, it was better, especially if she was away from windows. But it still wasn’t easy.

“Do you think it’s going to rain?” she asked Kelsey as her assistant came in the room with a cup of coffee for her. She took the steaming cup and thanked her.

Sitting down on the sofa next to her, Kelsey said, “The forecast said it might. Are you okay?”

Andrea wasn’t sure how to answer that. It seemed like everyone was keeping secrets from her, and she didn’t like it. “I guess so.”

“I’m really sorry about the talk show, but it sounds like you handled your business.”

“Thanks. I think I did. It’s just… do you think Myles knew about that?”

Kelsey shrugged. “I’ve never known Myles to miss a clause in a contract before. Maybe.”

“Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.” Andrea took another sip of her coffee, trying to decide what to do now. She really wanted to see Case, but she thought he was still busy with team business.

“Listen, there’s something I think you should know.”

Andrea didn’t like the tone Kelsey was taking. “What’s that?”

Blowing out a hot breath, her assistant said, “I talked to my friend who told me about how Sarah and Case got together in the first place, and she said she knows why they broke up. Andrea, I think you need to talk to Case about it.”

Andrea’s eyes bulged. “Did she tell you why they broke up?”

Kelsey shook her head. “No, she just said it wasn’t good and that if everyone finds out about it, she can’t imagine Case ever having another girlfriend.”

Chills went down Andrea’s spine as she thought about what that could mean. What had Case done or said to Sarah? She couldn’t imagine what it might be to get that sort of a reaction out of those who knew.

“I guess I better ask him then.” Andrea sighed. This day was shaping up to be pretty awful. She picked up her phone and pressed Case’s name, hoping he could come over and they could sort this out. Something told her she was better of not knowing, but then, if he’d done something awful to Sarah, he could do it to her, too, and she refused to let that happen. It would be better to end the whole thing now than to fall in love and let him break her heart.
