Chapter 157 Nobody's Rude to My Sister But Me
Saturday afternoon, Case had to go to final practice while Andrea attempted to watch. Rhonda had insisted that Andrea sit with her in a viewing box, rather than on top of the pit box so that they could talk. It wasn’t difficult for Case to arrange that, but Andrea could tell he felt sorry for her, having to leave her alone with Rhonda. Luckily, Andrea was able talk to Leslie into joining them.
Unluckily, Rhonda had talked Sarah into joining them, too.
It wasn’t that Sarah wasn’t polite and even friendly while the four of them sat behind the glass watching the cars practice. It was more Rhonda than Sarah that was driving Andrea crazy. She insisted on comparing Andrea to Sarah at every turn. “Oh, Sarah doesn’t drink soda, do you, dear?” she’d say, even as Sarah lifted a plastic straw to her lips. “Sarah is watching her figure, so she doesn’t eat junk food,” she’d say as all of them partook of the popcorn and other snacks that came with the box. “Sarah knows so much about racing. It’s like she’s watched it her whole life.”
Since Andrea had watched it her whole life, she knew far more than the other woman, but Andrea kept her mouth shut.
Leslie did not. “What are you drinking, Sarah?”
“Sprite,” the half-sister had replied. Leslie stared at Rhonda.
“What I meant to say is, she doesn’t drink soda with caffeine.”
“How many handfuls of popcorn is that now, Sarah?” Leslie had asked.
“I’ve lost count.”
“I haven’t. She’s always careful about what she eats,” Rhonda had insisted.
“What’s the penalty for leaving pit road with equipment, like Cliff Haager just did, Sarah?”
“What’s pit road?” Sarah had asked. That answer made Andrea laugh, and she’d had to turn away.
“I understand what you’re doing, Leslie,” Rhonda had finally said. She pursed her lips at the woman she’d just met. “I know you don’t like Sarah and you want her to look foolish, but please, leave her alone. She’s had a tough time recently. It’s almost as if someone is out to get her.”
“I’m not trying to make her feel foolish at all,” Leslie replied, leaning across Andrea to look at Rhonda. “I’m trying to point out that you’re being very unfair to Andrea. I like Sarah. I don’t have a problem with Sarah at all. But maybe if you took a few minutes to get to know Andrea, the woman your son is currently dating, maybe you’d like her, too.”
Rhonda looked like she’d just swallowed a lemon. “I don’t dislike Andrea. I simply feel she has some improvements to make, that’s all.”
“Let’s… not talk about this right now, okay, Leslie?” Andrea said, realizing her sister was about two seconds from completely losing her cool. She might argue with Andrea a lot, but Leslie had always been of the opinion that she was the only one allowed to give Andrea a hard time.
“I feel really sorry for you, Andrea.” Leslie wasn’t going to let it go. “It’s a pity that Case’s mother can’t get over the fact that he’s moved on. Even Sarah has let it go, but no, not you. You’d better hope that Andrea and Case never have kids because it’s gonna be super hard for Andrea to let you see them when you are so unbelievably rude to her.”
“Well, I never!” Rhonda exclaimed. “How dare you! Who my son dates is not your business!”
“Who is rude and ugly to my sister is my business!” Leslie jumped up out of her seat now, and Andrea swore she heard Sarah giggle.
“You are awful!” Rhonda exclaimed. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch my son race somewhere else!” Rhonda got up and walked out of the box, and a few moments later, Andrea could hear her yelling at the workers in the hall demanding they find her a better box to watch practice from.
Leslie sat down and folded her arms. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay. It’s not you. She just… hates me.”
“She used to hate me, too.”
Andrea turned her head to look at Sarah, not able to believe her ears. “What did you say, Sarah?”
“Yeah, when Case and I first started dating, she hated me, too. It wasn’t until he told her about the baby that she decided she liked me. So… if you do get pregnant….” Sarah shrugged and shoved a handful of popcorn in her mouth.
“Good to know….” Andrea returned her attention to the track, hoping it would finally be quiet enough to watch the practice, but she kept thinking about Rhonda. Would Case’s mom ever accept her? Even if she did have kids? She didn’t know, but she couldn’t stand being around the woman who seemed to hate everything about her.
