Chapter 129 Bad News

Case’s arms were warm and strong, and Andrea didn’t even want to open her eyes; she just wanted to stay in them forever.

They’d driven back to North Carolina late the night before—after all of the interviews and other publicity stuff was done. Case was supposed to go do a bunch of talk shows in New York City that week, but he’d talked them into starting the next day since that’s when Andrea would have to head back to LA. So, for the next few hours, he was hers and hers alone. Spending the entire time right there in his arms sounded like a good idea to her.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked her.

“You,” she said with a smile, running her hand across his palm. “I was just thinking about how proud of you I am. How lucky I am to be your girl. How I never want to be anywhere else except for where I am right now.”

With a crooked grin, Case kissed her on the forehead. “Thank you, baby. I’m so glad you were here with me last night. As much as the victory meant, it meant even more that you were there. But… we can’t stay here forever. You have an award show coming up.”

“Oh, gosh. I haven’t even had time to think about it. Where’s your race at that day?”

“California,” he said, still smiling. “If it’s over in time, I might be able to go. I mean… if you want me to.”

“Of course I want you to,” she said, shifting, sitting up slightly to look him in the eye. “But I don’t want you to worry about it throughout the whole race. I mean, it’s not like I’m going to win.”

“Are you kidding? Don’t say that. Of course you could win. I’d be shocked if you didn’t win.”

She rolled her eyes. You have to say that. You’re my boyfriend.”

“No, I don’t have to say that. But seriously, Andrea, I do think you could win. And I want to be there. But I might be late.”

“You don’t mind leaving the race track as soon as the race is over to make it to the awards ceremony?”

“No, I’d love to. With any luck, I’ll get there before your category, but if I don’t, at least I’ll get to spend the evening with you.”

Andrea had tears in her eyes at how sweet he was being. She leaned over and kissed him. “Thank you.”

“You bet. You’ve been there for me when I’ve won and lost. I’ll be there for you, no matter what.”

“If you win the race, though, there will be all those interviews and pictures….”

“They can wait. As soon as the race is over, I’ll be on my way. I’ll even put on a suit in the plane.”

She laughed at him and then found his lips one more time. If it wasn’t for her phone vibrating over and over again on the nightstand, she never would’ve pulled away, but it seemed like something important.

“Hold that thought,” she said to Case and picked her phone up. It was Kelsey. “Hello?”

“Hey. So sorry to bother you, but have you seen the news?”

“The news?” Andrea repeated. It was well past noon, so she could see why Kelsey would assume she’d be up. “No. What’s going on?”

“It’s Sarah.” Kelsey’s voice was as serious as she’d ever heard it. “She’s been arrested.”

“What?” Andrea sat up in bed, alarming Case who sat up next to her. “For what?”

“I’m not exactly sure. I’ve been trying to find out, but all of the reports just say she was arrested late last night in Daytona.”

Andrea wasn’t exactly sure how to process any of that. There were so many things Sarah could’ve gotten in trouble for. “Okay. Let me… look and see what I can figure out.”

“Okay. If I hear anything else, I’ll let you know.”

“Same,” Andrea promised and then she hung up. A glance at her phone told her she had a ton of missed calls from other people, including Leslie, who was probably calling about their other sister, their half-sister.

“What’s going on?” Case asked.

“Sarah’s been arrested,” she said, not sure if she should cry or cheer.

“For what?” Case asked, the same way Andrea had.

“I don’t know, but I’d like to figure it out sooner rather than later.”

She opened up the news app on her phone, praying she’d get some answers. Whatever it was for, she had no doubt Sarah deserved it.
