Chapter 132 Pay Back

The set was eerily quiet on Tuesday when they got back to filming the movie. It was a little sooner than anyone expected, considering the police investigation, but Andrea was actually happy to be back at work. She’d also be happy when this movie was done, and she could move on to something else. The number of scripts she received in the mail had gone up recently since she’d been nominated for the major award. She tried to read through as many as she could to get an idea of what she might want to do next, but so far, nothing was really sticking out to her.

She was shocked when she saw Sarah walking toward her across the sound stage area. As far as Andrea knew, her half-sister wasn’t supposed to be back on set yet. Gone was the confident woman who’d sashayed in there the first day. She looked humble now, morose even.

“Hi,” Andrea said, her forehead furrowed as Stephon stepped away to give them a moment.

“Hi. Sorry to interrupt. I wanted to come by to give you this in person.” She handed Andrea a white envelope full of cash.

“What is this?” Andrea asked, not sure what she should do with it.

“It’s a down payment. I was able to get an advance from the other movie. It’s not everything I owe you, but it’s a good start.”

“Wow, Sarah. Thanks. I wasn’t expecting this.”

“Why not? You didn’t think I’d pay you back?” She snickered, and Andrea considered what she’d said.

“No, it’s not that. I didn’t doubt you’d pay me back. I just didn’t expect so much so soon.”

“Well, I guess you can say I’m turning over a new leaf. Those few hours in jail were terrifying, and I never want to end up there again. I realize now I’ve been playing with fire, and I don’t want to get burned. So I’m changing my ways. From now on, Sarah Lockton is going to be on the straight and narrow. I’ve worked too hard for too long to get to this point, and I don’t want to lose it all because I can’t handle my emotions. You can rest assured that I will leave you and Case alone as well. Stewart and I made up, so I’ll still be going to the races, but I won’t be bothering either one of you.”

Andrea absorbed all of that, hoping at least part of it was true. “Well, thank you, Sarah,” Andrea said, managing a smile. “I really appreciate it, and I hope everything works out well for you—in Florida, and everywhere.”

“Thanks.” Sarah tossed her hair, a bit of that confidence she normally displayed coming back. “I’ve got to get to the other set now. I’ll see you later. Have a good day.”

“You, too.” Andrea watched her walk away, still holding the envelope and wondering what she should do with it. Part of her wondered if it was stolen or if Sarah had gotten it from someone paying her to murder someone. They weren’t the nicest thoughts that could’ve come to mind, but she couldn’t stop them.

“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop,” Stephon said, which made Andrea chuckle because she knew that wasn’t true. He always meant to eavesdrop. “But I don’t believe a word that woman just said.”

“You don’t?” Andrea’s heart dropped to her stomach.

“Nope. She’s making that up to put you at ease, make herself feel better for a while. Eventually, she’ll find some other way to justify being awful to you, and then it’ll start up all over again, probably worse the next time than before.”

As much as Andrea didn’t want to agree, she was afraid Stephon was right. “Hopefully, you’re wrong and this is all over now.”

Stephon shook his head. “Hopefully. But we both know I’m right.”

Andrea didn’t say anything else—there was nothing more to say. At least Sarah was being nice right now. But there was no way in the world Andrea would turn her back on the other woman. Not for a second.

“You about ready, Andrea?” Cam called from across the set. “We’ve got a lot of ground to make up.”

“I’m ready,” Andrea called back as Stephon put the final touches on her makeup. With any luck, they’d get caught up soon, and no one else would get hurt. It seemed like this set was jinxed, which could be bad luck or it could be bad people. Andrea made eye contact with her bodyguards as she walked across to the set, handing the money to Kelsey for safe keeping as she went. For once, she didn’t have that feeling in her stomach that something bad was about to happen, but that didn’t mean they weren’t in for more “accidents” on the set, not as long as Sarah was involved in the movie, regardless of the new leaf she’d allegedly turned. The truth remained to be seen.
