Chapter 215 Thankful for You

Andrea had never cooked a Thanksgiving dinner before, not by herself, and not really with anyone else either. She’d watched her grandmother do it when she was younger, and then, she’d done a few things to help her mom when she’d taken over, but she hadn’t ever done the whole thing by without any help. For the last two weeks, she’d been telling Case she thought she could do it, but she was nervous, afraid she’d ruin everything.

Luckily, Case wasn’t going to let her do it all by herself this time either. While she tried to concentrate on the turkey, he did most of the sides, which were the hardest part, in her opinion. Case made the dressing, yams, green bean casserole, and peeled all of the potatoes. Andrea mashed them while the turkey was roasting, in-between bastings. She was basting it every thirty minutes to make sure the turkey was nice and juice. She’d warm up the rolls later, too, which would only take a few moments and not a lot of skill.

The night before, she’d made a pumpkin pie. It had taken her more time to make the crust than she had ever expected. That would be their only dessert, but it was fine since it was just the two of them. As it was, they’d have enough leftovers to last at least a week, but that was okay. She didn’t want to scale down the recipes and make them taste different, and she didn’t want to invite anyone else. Kelsey had gone with Rick to his parents’ house, and even though her mom had desperately wanted her there, she’d declined. This Thanksgiving was just about her and Case.

The parade was on as she basted the turkey for the twentieth time, or so it seemed. Case was in the kitchen working, too, but they could hear it from the television in the living room. Andrea had been asked to be in the parade this year, but she’d had to say no. While she’d always wanted to be in the Thanksgiving Day parade, this was not the year for that. She was content to watch it on TV. No matter what she was doing, when Santa came on, she’d have to stop and watch.

“Are you gonna wanna watch the dog show when this is over, or can I watch football?” Case asked, coming over and kissing her on the cheek.

She smiled. “Is that your way of buttering me up so that you can get your way?”

“Maybe,” he said, nuzzling her ear.

“We can watch football.” She liked football, but she also liked the dog show. Maybe she’d watch it on the commercials. Love was about compromises, right?

Just before noon, the turkey was done, and the happy couple was ready to sit down at the table and eat. They both set the table, and as Andrea fixed her plate, she couldn’t help but smile. Being with Case was the one thing in life she was most thankful for.

They held hands and said a prayer, and then, Andrea dug in, so glad that everything had turned out perfect. Life wasn’t always that way, but in moments like this, it sure seemed like it was.

After stuffing herself on turkey and all the fixings, Andrea didn’t have any room for pie. That would have to wait until later. She and Case snuggled under a blanket on the couch while he watched football, and she watched him, until she started to doze off.

“Are you sleeping?” Case asked, his voice a whisper against her ear. His soft breath tickled and ignited a fire within her she couldn’t ignore.

“Huh?” she asked, raising her face to his. “I think so.” His lips found hers, lightly at first, but then with more passion, and suddenly, she was awake. She ran her hands up his chest, as his found their way to her bottom, and she realized there’d be no more television watching or sleeping for a while as the two of them melted together. Case knew just how to kiss her and just where to touch her to get Andrea’s body to respond. Now, that was something Andrea could be thankful for.
