Chapter 170 Victory Lane is for Winners
Victory Lane was even different from this side of the car. The burn outs hadn’t gone so well, but Andrea was still ecstatic as she pulled into victory circle and climbed from the window. Case was there to catch her, giving her a quick kiss, and the team sprayed her with sticky liquid she assumed was champagne as confetti fell from the sky, just as if she’d won a real race.
There were even a slew of reporters there with microphones, wanting to ask her questions. She had no idea what to say, but she’d heard enough interviews to have some idea how it was supposed to go.
Before she could answer the first questions, her sister came over and wrapped her arms around her. “Good job, sis. You deserve to win,” Leslie said in her ear.
“You did a great job,” Andrea replied, deciding not to ask her why she had tried to wreck her coming to the flag. “I’m proud of you, sister.”
“Thank you. Now, get your celebration on, girl.”
She moved aside and Charlie wrapped Andrea in a tight bear hug. “That’s the way you do it!” he said. “Man, y’all kept it interesting. Way to go. If Leslie couldn’t win, I’m glad it was you.”
“Thanks, Charlie.” She squeezed him back and then turned her attention to the people with the microphones.
“Congratulations, Andrea. How does it feel, winning your first race?”
“Thank you—it feels great. It’s all kind of surreal at the moment. I’ve never raced a car before, so I didn’t expect to win. But I had an excellent teacher in Jo, a great crew chief in Brad, and one of the best spotters in Truitt. It also didn’t hurt that Case gave me some pointers.” She patted him on the chest, and they all chuckled.
“Do you think you’ll ever want to do this again?” the reporter asked.
“Definitely,” she said without hesitation. “I just love racing. I think it’s in my blood now, if it wasn’t before. It’s certainly in my heart. I don’t think I’m going to change careers anytime soon, but if I ever get another chance to compete in an event like this one, I’ll definitely be there.”
“Did you think your sister was going to wreck you there as you were coming to the checkered flag?” the reporter asked.
Andrea laughed, even though it really wasn’t funny. “I thought it was a possibility, I’m not going to lie. Leslie is a fierce competitor, which is one of the reasons why she’s so successful in life. She doesn’t give up. I’ve played Monopoly with her enough times to know not to turn my back on her! But she didn’t spin me out, which was cool, and we finished one, two, which means our family at home has got to be proud, especially our Grandpa Jack who loves racing like no one else I’ve ever met.”
“Including Case?” the reporter joked.
That made her giggle. “Maybe so!”
“Well, we are very happy for you, Andrea. Congratulations on the win, and we hope we get to see you and your sister race again soon!”
“Thank you!” Andrea answered questions from a few more reporters, but then she got to stand on the stage and pose with the large trophy she’d won and take a whole bunch of pictures. It was a lot more fun this time since she had been the one to win, as opposed to just standing there while Case did it.
By the time they headed back to the RV, Andrea was exhausted. She knew she needed to take a shower and get out of the fire suit, but at the moment, all she could do was sit on the couch and close her eyes.
“Man, am I proud of you,” Case said, dropping down next to her. “You are a feisty little racecar driver if I’ve ever seen one.”
Opening one eye, Andrea said, “Yeah?” She laughed and then closed her eye. “Thanks. I learned from the best.”
“Jo?” he asked.
“Ha! Uh, no. You, silly. But Jo was awesome. I really like him.”
“Should I be worried?” The feel of his warm breath on her cheek had her feeling more energized. Andrea turned to face him, and Case found her lips with his.
“Nope,” she assured him before continuing to explore his mouth with hers.
“Good. Because, as hot as you look in that fire suit, I’m sure you look even hotter without it.” He took hold of the pull on the zipper and slid it down slightly, and Andrea encouraged him to go right ahead with her eyes. With a sly smile, Case continued to tug it down as Andrea leaned in for more kisses, thinking she might’ve won on the racetrack, but she was about to score in the RV.
