Chapter 141 Red Carpet Ride
Arriving at the red carpet, Andrea sucked in air and prepared for the chaos that was about to surround her. Normally, she’d have a date with her for something like this, but Case hadn’t arrived yet. He was in the air, on his way. With any luck, he’d be here before the show began. That wouldn’t help her now, though, as she walked past hundreds of reporters, photographers, and raving fans.
She slid out of the car and took the gloved hand of a young man stationed there to help stars such as herself out in their long gowns and heals. She thanked him and immediately began the smiling and waving routine she’d trained for years ago when she’d first become a star. There were certain rules and etiquette she had to follow here, and she tried to keep all of that in mind as she began to make her way down the stretch of scarlet carpet.
Her dress seemed to be fine. There was nothing itchy or pokey, and the seams were holding. She tucked her bag, which contained her phone, some makeup, and her speech, beneath her arm and headed toward the first stop.
A reporter she’d spoken to before who happened to work for one of the cable channels was standing there, a big grin on her face. “Look who we have here!” she proclaimed. “Andrea Sparks! You look amazing—like you’re on fire. And with the year you’ve had at the box office, we can see why. Who are you wearing?”
“Hello, Vanessa. It’s nice to see you,” Andrea began with a grateful smile. “This dress is a Lanshia Parque made just for me for this occasion.” She turned around letting the full gown pick up the light and seem to change to patches of fire as she came back around.
“Oh, my! It’s just gorgeous. How creative! Tell us how you’re feeling about your chances of winning tonight.”
The microphone was thrust into Andrea’s face. She took a deep breath to collect herself and repeated the same response to this obvious question she’d been practicing for weeks. “You know, it sounds cliché, but it truly is an honor to be nominated. There are so many wonderful actresses up for this award. I’m just privileged to be among them.”
“Wonderful, wonderful. And what about Sarah Lockton? What if she wins?”
“Sarah gave a moving performance in the film she’s nominated for. She’s a gifted actress. If she wins, it will be well deserved.”
“That’s interesting to hear from you,” Vanessa noted. “And where is your date? Where’s Case? Are you still dating him?”
Andrea nodded. “Case had a race today. He’s on his way, though. With any luck, he’ll be here before the show starts.” She managed a smile, but she felt nervous about it. Once his plane landed, he’d still have to contend with traffic, and in LA, it could take anywhere from a few minutes to hours for him to get here from the airport.
“Fabulous!” Vanessa exclaimed. “Well, thank you so much for speaking to us, and best of luck tonight.”
“Of course. Thank you.” Andrea patted the woman on the arm and headed to the next microphone, giving the couple in front of her, an older actor and his wife, time to move on before she got there. She knew this would be her life for the next hour and a half or more, but she was okay with it. Just being there was something she’d dreamt of since she was a little girl. Now that she was up for one of the major awards, it was even more exciting. It was just too bad she didn’t have Case with her to enjoy it.
He’d be there. She just knew he’d make it. Still, an uneasy feeling came over her as she wondered what might happen if he didn’t make it there in time for her award. It wasn’t that she was afraid he’d miss out on her winning, but if she lost, it would be nice to be holding his hand. And if Sarah happened to win, she’d really need his reassurance that it would be all right.
The couple in front of her moved on, and Andrea squared her shoulders and approached the next reporter, exuding an air of confidence she didn’t necessarily feel. But then, she was an actress, so if anyone could pull it off, it was her.
