Chapter 201 Waiting Room
Her knees were shaking so hard when she stood, Andrea was afraid she might crumple right there in the waiting room. Luckily, her sister came with her, even though the doctor hadn’t asked her to. He walked back through the door, and the two women followed.
The question had to be written all over her face, but her lips wouldn’t form any words as she stared at his face expectantly. The doctor nodded, and Andrea felt a bit of breath come back into her lungs. “Mr. Meyer is alive….”
Other words followed those four. Andrea didn’t catch many of them. Something about resuscitation, breathing tube, monitoring…. Unconscious. She hoped Leslie was hearing everything because she had no idea what the doctor was telling her.
“Andrea, did you hear that?” Leslie asked, but she still couldn’t answer. All Andrea could do was nod her head.
The doctor said something else, but he was speaking to her sister now, clearly noticing Andrea was a lost cause. He pushed the door open, and Leslie led her back out to the waiting room. Then, the doctor disappeared, and she heard his footsteps echoing down the corridor.
Every eye in the waiting room was trained on them as they awaited news Andrea couldn’t share. All she knew was that he was alive.
Leslie took over. “That was the chief surgeon, Dr. Collins. He said that Case is stable but still in intensive care for the moment.” There was a collective sigh of relief as everyone absorbed that information. “When they brought him in, he was unconscious, but they’ve revived him, and it doesn’t appear as if he has any lasting injuries. They will continue to monitor him for the next few hours, and if he continues to improve, they will allow a few visitors, one at a time, to come in and see him.”
Thank God her sister had come with her and had been listening so well because Andrea didn’t catch much of that at all.
She was back in a chair. This time, it was Brad’s arm around her as Leslie went over to talk to Charlie. She glanced over at them out of the corner of her eye. Charlie was still crying and upset. It wasn’t Leslie’s nature to be overly sympathetic, and she didn’t appear to be awfully compassionate now as Charlie was clearly blaming himself for all of this.
The team owner was making a speech, encouraging all of the extraneous team members to go back to the track, saying he’d be in touch with them. He only wanted Brad to stay with the girls, and of course he was leaving Charlie be. None of the crew members wanted to go. Some of them were even crying. Andrea said nothing, only stared at the door, as she had been before.
Eventually, the men in fire suits began to file out. Brad got up to speak to them. She wanted them to stay, especially Truitt, who’d essentially spun through the entire wreck with Case. Tears sprang to her eyes again, this time for this loyal team of people who just wanted to stay. It was probably best if they did leave, especially since several of Bill’s crew were here now, too. She didn’t see his wife, but then, for all she knew, she’d come in while Andrea was in her stupor and was in a different waiting room.
After the rest of the people had gone, the voices from across the room became louder, and Andrea turned her attention to her sister who was arguing with Charlie about something. Now wasn’t the time or the place. While she was glad Leslie had been there to help her, if she didn’t knock it off soon, Andrea was going to have to go over and say something.
They saw her watching them, and Charlie apologized from across the room and then told Leslie, “We’ll talk about it later.”
“That’s what you always say,” Leslie replied and then got up and walked away.
Andrea didn’t know what they were talking about, and she didn’t care. She just wanted Dr. Collins or whatever his name was, to come back and tell her she could see Case now. How many hours was she going to have to sit there before she got to see him for herself? Until she did, she wouldn’t be able to accept for sure that he was okay.
The doors swung open again, catching Andrea off guard. “Miss Sparks?” It was a nurse this time, not the doctor. She nodded. “Come on back, sweetie. Mr. Meyer is asking for you.”
On trembling legs, Andrea got up and followed the nurse back, wishing someone could go with her because she wasn’t sure she could make it on her own. But she’d find a way. The man she loved was awake enough to ask for her. That was good news, wasn’t it?
