Chapter 77 Love on the Line
The North Carolina sun was bright, but it was still chilly outside as Case waited to see if Andrea would answer her phone this time. Since he’d left the set of the interview for the sports channel, he’d tried a few times to reach her but came up short.
This time, thank goodness, she answered. He was standing outside of the garage, getting ready for a seat fitting, but he’d have a few minutes to chat. “Hi,” she said, sounding a little irritated—hopefully not at him. “I hope your day is going better than mine.”
“Oh, no,” he replied. “That’s not good. What happened?”
She growled. “Sarah just tried to sabotage our relationship. She set it up so that it would look like I was kissing Travis.” He could practically hear her rolling her eyes. “He lured me into a corner by the costumes, and one of her assistance, probably Gidget, tripped me so that I’d fall into him. He caught me with his mouth….”
“Are you serious? Those a*sholes!”
“I know, right? Luckily, I saw them sneaking around before any of this happened and sent Kelsey to trail them. She caught all of their scheming on video and even snapped a pic of Sarah photographing the trip. You can even see a hand around my ankle!”
“That Kelsey is a good friend. She’s worth a million bucks.”
“She sure is. It’s too bad her phone got broken in all of this. I’m going to buy her a new one. Anyway, how are you, baby? How’s your day been?”
Case took a deep breath. She was already having a bad day—there was no sense in telling her his was equally sh*tty. Besides, it was enough to make him feel better that he got to hear her voice and hear her call him baby. “It’s been nice to see everyone. The team’s all ready to go. We’ve got some good ideas to make this the best season yet.”
“That’s awesome. I’m so glad to hear that. It really makes me feel better that you’re having a good day. At least one of us is!”
He chuckled. If she only knew the truth. But he wasn’t going to go there. “I miss you so much.”
“I miss you, too. I can’t wait until I can see you again.”
“It won’t be long.” He smiled at the idea of picking her up at the airport in just a few days. “Did Sarah tell you about her new boyfriend?”
Andrea groaned. “She won’t stop talking about him. You don’t have to worry about the possibility of me ever cheering for Gordon Jones again.”
“Not that you ever did do begin with. Your grandpa set me straight on that one.”
The sound of her sweet laughter in his ear was like a song. “That man always sells me out.”
Case thought about the mention of storms. He still hadn’t gotten that whole story yet. Again, there was no sense talking about something that would just upset her. “I love you, Andrea.”
“Gosh, I love you, too, Case. So much.”
One of his crew members shouted his name from the garage door. “I have to go, babe. But I’ll see you soon.”
“All right. Take care.”
She hung up, and he put his phone in his pocket, returning to the garage with a smile on his face. Even though he hated the fact that Jim had asked such personal questions during the interview, he was glad to have someone so special to ask personal questions about.
Walking back into the garage, that car smell filled his lungs, and Case was ready to go racing. He’d show Jim and all of the other doubts not to underestimate Case Meyer.
“You ready to test the seat out?” his crew chief, Brad, asked as he approached the racecar they were all gathered around in.
“I’m ready.” Case hadn’t climbed in a racecar for a few months, but it was as natural to him as breathing. He swung one leg into the car window and pulled in the other, sliding down into the seat.
It wrapped around him like a glove, made specifically for him. The driver’s seat was a snug fit for him, but that’s exactly what it was supposed to be like. The new seat was great, as comfortable as possible for what they did.
Brad leaned in the window and pointed out a few improvements to the seat and the panel in front of him. Mostly, everything was the same, but a few things were different—better.
“What do you think?” Brad asked, still leaning on the window ledge.
“I think… I’m ready to go racing.”
