Chapter 53 Tricking the Trickster

The set of Sarah’s new movie was being constructed in a backlot fairly close to the sound stage where Andrea was filming. Case sat outside in his car, waiting for Sarah to make her way out of the studio, wishing he could go see Andrea for a few minutes, but she’d told him that the director didn’t want him on set, and he could respect that. Of course, there could be no drama over him with Sarah on a day when she wasn’t there, but he wasn’t about to argue with the boss.

A few days had passed since he’d taken Sarah to lunch, and every day since then, he’d asked her about the doctor. She always had an excuse as to why she couldn’t make it. So… today, he was making sure there were no excuses, even though she didn’t know it.

It didn’t surprise him that she was running behind. He checked the time on his phone. She was already five minutes late. Luckily, he’d built “Sarah time” into the schedule. He needed to get her to the doctor’s appointment at exactly the right time so they were ready for her and he could whisk her right in. They were aware of the situation—that she might not want to stay—and while they couldn’t make her, it would help if they had a room ready when she walked in. He’d already done his part, so all they needed was to get a sample from the baby. Using the newest technology, they could actually do that noninvasively through a blood sample from Sarah, which Case thought was amazing. He hoped she’d consent to a sonogram while he was there as well since he really wanted to hear the heartbeat. He’d never gotten a chance to hear that the first time.

Ten minutes later than planned, he saw Sarah walking toward him across the parking lot, not rushing at all. She was on her phone but waved when she saw him. He got out of the car to help her in, and she hung up as soon as she reached him. Her arms went around his neck, and she kissed his cheek. “It’s so great to see you!”

“Hi, Sarah. Come on, or we’ll be late.”

“No restaurants is going to give our table away.” She rolled her eyes and sat down, pulling her long blonde hair over her shoulder before she leisurely put the seat belt on. “I’m starving,” she said, rubbing her belly. “This baby is such a little piggy!” She giggled and leaned over like she was talking to the child.

Case took a deep breath. She’d done that when she was pregnant before. It took him back to one of the happiest times of his life—and one of the saddest.

“All right, Sarah. We are going to eat. But we have to run in here first.” He turned into the parking lot where the doctor’s office was located.

“What the hell, Case? No way! You can’t force me to see a doctor!”

“Come on, Sarah.” He was already out of the car, keys in his pocket. He came around to the passenger side and tried to open the door, but she’d locked it. “Sarah!”

“No, Case! You can’t make me!”

Knowing he was going to have to do some sweet talking to get her out of the car, he said, “Come on, baby, don’t act like this.”

“Baby?” She perked up, but she was clearly still not trusting him. “Did you call me baby?”

“You’re carrying my baby, right? I guess that makes you my baby, too. We really will be late for our reservations if you don’t come on.” He had made reservations at one of her favorite restaurants, but he didn’t know if she’d still want to go after he tricked her.

He could unlock the door himself, but she’d just relock it, and he didn’t want to play that game if he could avoid it.

“How does this work?” she shouted through the glass.

“They’ll just take a little blood and send it off to the lab. That’s all.”

Sarah raised an eyebrow. “That’s all?”

“Yep. That’s it. I mean, I’d love to hear the baby’s heartbeat while we’re here.”

“No way! In and out. A little poke and that’s it. If you wanna hear the heartbeat, you can go to my regular OB appointment in two weeks.”

“I will be back in North Carolina then.”

“Well, I guess that’s your loss,” she shouted back.

“Fine. No ultrasound. Just the blood test. Come on.”

“How long does it take to get the results?”

“Four to six weeks,” Case replied.

Sarah looked at the door handle, at the doctor’s office building and at him. “Just a little blood, and nothing else.”

“You got it, baby.” His tone made him want to vomit, but it was working. She unlocked the door and slowly got out of the car.

“If you do anything without my consent, Case Anderson Meyer, I swear to God, I will kick you’re a*s from here to Timbuktu.”

“I promise, baby,” Case said, gritting his teeth as he leaned down and kissed her cheek.

Sarah let out a little giggle and then turned so that he was forced to kiss her on the lips. Case felt terrible, but at least she was cooperating. Once he got what he wanted, he’d worry about how to fix the fact that she now had it in her head that they were a couple. Andrea would forgive him if she knew his reasoning. He’d forgiven her for getting drunk and dancing with Travis Copper, after all.

“Let’s get this over with. I hate needles.” Sarah took his hand and he led her to the doctor’s office, holding his breath the whole way.
