Chapter 164 Talk it Out

“Do you believe her?” Case was asking on the phone. Andrea had called him as soon as she got back home from her dinner with Sarah. She’d left it at “give me some time,” and Sarah had agreed that she would give her as much time as she needed.

“I have no idea,” Andrea admitted. “I want to believe her. But it’s hard for me to believe Cam acted all on his own with this. Why would he give me this part instead of Sarah to begin with if he hates me so much? He never seemed to hate me while we were working together.”

“Is it possible he had no say over who was given the lead? Maybe be the studio hired you.”

“I guess that’s possible. Usually, they at least ask the director.”

“Maybe he wanted you in it so that he could make another attempt to eliminate you.”

“That seems more like something a hitman would do than a movie director.”

“Perhaps he’s filmed too many action adventure films,” Case offered.

Andrea laughed. “He does have a lot of those under his belt. I don’t know what to think. I guess we’ll wait and see what the police come up with. She also said that they dropped the charges in Florida, and we know she did that.”

“Figures.” Case was quiet for a second, and she could almost hear him shaking his head. “I don’t think she realized how deadly what she was doing could’ve been if that tire had gone into the crowd.”

“Yeah, I assume she was just trying to ruin Gordo’s race, which is bad enough considering how much work goes into preparing for a race, especially Daytona, but a tire going that fast hitting people would’ve been catastrophic.”

“Exactly. She should at least have to pay for the damage to the car and the losses the team suffered from not being able to race that day.”

“Maybe they’ll sue her in civil court,” Andrea surmised.

“All I know is, when I saw Gordo today, he looked like he was ready to tear someone’s head off. I’m sure that it had something to do with the district attorney’s decision.”

Andrea decided to talk about something else. She took a sip from her water that was right next to her on the end table. “I’ll see you in a couple of days.”

“I know. And I’m really excited about it, too. Are you ready to go racing Saturday?”

Andrea laughed. “Do you think they’re really going to let us race, race? Or is this going to seem more like a movie about racing?”

“I don’t know. I think there will be some racing involved. I hear your sister, Leslie, is practicing on video games. She’s got a wheel and pedals set up and everything.”

“That doesn’t surprise me. I wish I had time for that, but they’re just going to have to take me as I come.”

Case chuckled. “I bet you’re pretty good at handling a racecar even without any practice.”

“I hope so. At least we won’t have to worry about Sarah trying to take me out. I can’t imagine she’d go to all the trouble to talk to me over dinner and then try to kill me on the track.”

“Did she say she was sorry?”

Andrea had to think about that. “Uh… not that I recall.”

“Then… I wouldn’t turn my back on her. That’s all I’ve got to say.”

A shiver went up Andrea’s spine. She didn’t want to admit that he was right, but trusting Sarah was a sure way to make sure that Andrea ended up wrecked or worse. Not only had she not even bothered to say she was sorry, even if she had, Andrea wouldn’t have been able to trust it. Sarah could throw “I’m sorry” around like it was confetti—that didn’t mean she felt it.

Andrea decided she didn’t want to talk about Sarah anymore. “When will we find out what driver we’ve been paired with, do you know?”

“I think Saturday morning. We’ll all have our final practice, then they’ll meet with you, assign partners, and you will get a chance to practice. The Xfinity division race will follow that, and you guys will race after that race is over.”

“Sounds good to me,” Andrea said. She knew none of the racers who had loved ones participating would be chosen as partner drivers. “I hope I don’t get Whiskey.”

Case laughed. “Me, too. He’d have you driving straight into a wall.”

The idea of driving into a wall made Andrea nervous. For a moment, she thought maybe she didn’t want to do this. But then, the excitement took over again. “I can’t wait to give it a try. Then, you get to try acting.”

“No, thanks,” he laughed. “I have done a few commercials, and that’s enough acting for me.”

Andrea had seen a few of those commercials. “You’re a pretty good actor. Maybe you should consider taking that as your next career, after you retire from racing.”

“Uh… no.”

Now it was her turn to laugh. He seemed pretty sure of himself. “Fine… I’ll just take up racing full-time. Then we can be together all the time,” she teased.

“Sounds like a good plan to me.”

Andrea wished it was that simple. At least she’d get to see him in a couple of days. With any luck, Sarah wouldn’t try anything—but like Case had said, they shouldn’t count on that.
