Chapter 96 Not Much to Go On
Friday, Andrea had one eye glued to the time all day as she eagerly awaited finishing shooting for the day so she could get on the plane and head to Florida to spend time with Case. He’d have the evening off but tomorrow was full since he had practice, meetings, and then the shootout. Sunday would also be busy with qualifying. Friday night might be the only time she had him to herself for a few hours.
He was staying in his trailer on the racetrack grounds, like nearly every driver did every weekend. His trailer was really nice, though. Not that she’d seen it in person, but sometimes the drivers did interviews from their RVs, and she’d seen Case do that before. It wouldn’t be the same as being at his beautiful house in North Carolina, but she was ready to see the Florida sun, even if she wouldn’t have much time to spend on the beach.
She was just about finished shooting for the day when she heard someone say her name and turned to see Officer Gonzalez and Officer Buress heading her direction. Two of her bodyguards stepped between them and her location in order to double check their identification, and then they let the officers through.
“Ms. Sparks, do you have a moment?” Officer Gonzalez said as he approached.
“Yes, of course,” she replied, walking toward them. A nervous flutter started in her stomach. Had they found something out about what had happened to her? Something important?
“We wanted to come and update you on our findings,” Officer Buress said. “We spoke to the other people on set and to the company that sends the divers out. They said they sent a diver named George out to work on the movie that day, that they’ve never heard of a man named Sven Juenger, which is what the diver who was working with you that day told Cam his name was.”
“We’ve been trying to find him, but we can’t find a trace of anyone living in the LA area by that name, certainly no one registered with any of the companies that provide divers.” Officer Gonzalez did not look hopeful.
“So… you’re telling me chances are you’re not going to be able to track him down?” Andrea was crestfallen. She pressed two fingers to her forehead and tried not to cry. Was he really going to get away with this?
“We’ve been speaking to Ms. Lockton. We’re not completely sure she’s telling us everything. We do know that she called Mr. Meyer before you were actually pulled out of the tank. If what he says she said is true, it seems it’s possible she was involved somehow, but she says she only called to tell Mr. Meyer that there had been an accident on set, and that someone on set had called her. She wasn’t sure who it was. She says she definitely didn’t tell him you were dead.”
Andrea was shaking her head. “She’s lying. Case wouldn’t make that up.”
“It is possible she’s being less than straight forward with us, Ms. Sparks, but we will need more evidence before we can be sure of that.”
“And how can you get that?” Andrea folded her arms in frustration.
“We are planning to speak to some more people that were on set that day, see if we can determine who may have called Sarah. If someone can show us that they called her, she’ll be cleared. But… if no one says they did call her, we’ll have more reason to go and speak to her again.” Officer Gonzalez sounded only as if he was trying to sound hopeful, not as if he truly had hope himself.
“What about the footage? Did it help with anything?”
“It helped us determine how long you were underwater. Rather than draining the vat, we had a detective go under the boat in a dive suit. He was able to determine there was nothing there for your costume to get caught on. Likewise, there was no tear in your costume. So, I suppose what I’m saying is, we do believe you when you say this Sven person was trying to kill you. Unfortunately, we don’t know who or where he is. Nor can we tie Ms. Lockton to the crime at this point.” Officer Bures was more matter-of-fact than Officer Gonzalez had been.
“We’re not finished with our investigation, Ms. Sparks,” Officer Gonzalez assured her. “We will continue to work on this until we get a break. But we wanted to come and update you.”
“Thank you—both of you,” Andrea said, trying to force a smile through her tears. “I do appreciate everything you’ve done.”
“Hopefully, we’ll have better news for you soon.” Officer Buress smiled reassuringly, and then both of them turned to go.
Andrea took a few deep breaths and tried to hold back the teardrops that threatened to fall from her eyes.
“Is everything okay?” Kelsey asked, coming up behind her.
“No. They can’t find Sven, and they can’t prove Sarah had anything to do with it.” The outlook was bleak, and Andrea had to wipe tears off of her cheeks.
Kelsey put her hands on Andrea’s shoulders. “I’m so sorry, Andrea. But… I think they’ll get to the bottom of it, and those two will get what they deserve.”
“I hope so,” Andrea said with a deep breath. “I hope so.”
