Chapter 38 Love Takes Flight

It was easier to get on the plane the second time. The weather was beautiful, and the flight to LA from Seattle wouldn’t take that long. Sitting next to Case, sipping champagne, Andrea still felt like she’d made the right decision. Leaving Mrs. Meyer and her ugly attitude behind was also a bonus.

They chatted about places they might visit in town. While they had only officially been on the one date to the New Year’s Eve party, all of Hollywood assumed they were a couple now, so they may as well go out on the town and have fun. There were historical landmarks Case wanted to see, which Andrea wasn’t so enthusiastic about, but when he agreed to go to some clubs and restaurants with her, that made her face light up.

“None of my exes liked to go to the museums and historic sites either,” Case lamented.

Shaking her head, Andrea said, “It’s not that I don’t like them. It’s just… I’ve been to most of them before.”

“I bet you haven’t been to the ones I want to see,” Case dared her.

Andrea smiled at his enthusiasm. “Maybe not. I’ll definitely go with you. But you have to understand that it’s important for me to be seen at the hottest clubs and hangouts.”

“I get that. It’s not like I’ve never dated an actress before.”

Whether he meant to hurt her or not, that remark stung. Andrea’s face fell, and Case immediately apologized. “It’s okay. I know who all of your ex-girlfriends are. I knew that before I ever got into the SUV.”

“It was still rude. I didn’t mean it like that.”

Andrea tried to change her disposition but it was hard. He had dated a lot of celebrities, but the one that stuck in her mind was Sarah, of course. And Andrea would be forced to work with her soon. At least Sarah’s part in the movie was small enough that she wouldn’t be on set at the beginning. “She’s not still calling you, is she?”

He raised an eyebrow. “No. She hasn’t called recently.”

It was evident he didn’t want to be in a position where his current flame was constantly questioning him about who he was talking to, so Andrea tried to stop herself from asking any more questions. But that didn’t quite happen. “What do you consider recent? Two days ago isn’t recent?”

“How do you know she called me two days ago?” His head was cocked to the side in a challenge.

Not thinking about the fact that she’d been eavesdropping, Andrea said, “She called you New Year’s Day, right?” She immediately realized her mistake and closed her mouth. Eyes wide.

“How do you know that?”

Swallowing hard, she thought for a moment. “Uh, you said she told you she got the part. I assumed she called you.”

“I didn’t say she told me. I just told you I knew. Were you eavesdropping on me again?” His ears were turning a little red, like he was really angry this time.

Andrea stared at him for a moment. “Not on purpose. I was going to the bathroom, and….”

“And you decided my personal conversation was your business.”

“No! Your door was open. I couldn’t help but hear. I didn’t listen to everything!”

“Good grief, Andrea!” Case folded his arms and turned to look out the window, shaking his head.

“Sorry. I didn’t realize you and Sarah had something to hide.” She crossed her arms as well, wishing she had a window to stare out. Instead, she was looking at another seat.

He was quiet for a long time, and Andrea didn’t like it. The distance between them was merely inches, but it felt like miles. Eventually, Case took a deep breath and said, “I don’t have any secrets about my current relationship with Sarah, which is a chaotic wrestling match of wills, but there are things that transpired between us before that are still private. I will talk to you about them as you and I get to know each other better, but it’s not something I tell everyone I’ve only known for a few weeks. Unless, of course, that’s part of what you overheard.”

She thought about what he was saying as she ran to the bathroom that morning. The reason they broke up. That must be what he was talking about now. Andrea had secrets, too. She wasn’t willing to open up right now and tell him what Sarah had done to her. It was too painful to talk about, and she had signed a nondisclosure. There was also the secret she’d buried long ago about her uncle’s death. No one knew about that except her family, not even Kelsey.

As long as one of the secrets Case was carrying wasn’t that he was still dating Sarah, she knew she had to give him time to talk to her about anything else. “Okay,” she said quietly. “I’m sorry.”

“If you ever hear me having a conversation and want to know what I’m talking about, Andrea, ask. I’ll tell you.”

She nodded, understanding he meant anything but whatever had driven the two of them apart. “All right.”

Case raised a hand to her cheek, the feel of his rough fingertips igniting a fire within her. Slowly, he pulled her close to him, his breath caressing her face before his warm lips were on hers. The icy exterior she’d attempted to surround herself during the discussion melted away as Andrea lost herself in his touch.
