Chapter 116 Next Victim

A benefit for a local children’s hospital was held Wednesday night. Case saw Gordo there. While Gordo was mingling with the other drivers and important invited guests, he wasn’t himself. His smile seemed forced, and his eyes weren’t the bright, vivid shade they usually were.

Case wanted to talk to him but didn’t want to cause a scene, and there was a possibility Gordon might yell at him, so he waited until the other driver was somewhat secluded before he came over and said quietly, “Hey, Gordo. How’s it going?”

Gordon took a drink of whatever alcoholic beverage he had in his glass and shrugged. “Not so great. How are you, Case?”

“All right. I just wanted to say… I’m sorry about all of that.”

“I bet you are.” He rolled his eyes. “You probably think it’s funny. Here I am, willing to do whatever she wants me to do, including risking getting my car torn up, and all she’s trying to do is get back in your pants. Awesome.”

Case hated that he felt that way, but at least, maybe that meant Sarah wouldn’t be at the races anymore, which made him happy. Perhaps he’d get a reprieve from her antics. “Look, man, she’s really good at fooling people. She’s an actress, after all.”

“Yeah, but I should’ve listened to you and Andrea.” He shook his head. “I feel like an idiot.”

“Don’t. You’re not her first victim, and unfortunately, I’m sure you won’t be her last.”

“No, probably not.” He took another drink and there was something about the way he said it that made Case curious that he knew something.

“Don’t tell me she’s after someone else already?”

He nodded. “Yeah, Antony came up to me earlier and asked if I would mind if he returned her call. I didn’t know if I should cry or slug him.”

Case let that set in. Stewart Antony was the champion last year, a good driver, though young, even younger than Sarah. “What did you do?”

“I burst out laughing,” Gordon admitted. “I told him to go for it if he didn’t mind feeling like he was living in an episode of The Twilight Zone.” He shrugged again. “Kid’s not thinking with the right head, though.”

“Unfortunately, he’ll probably learn his lesson,” Case noted. “Although, there’s a chance she really does like him, and she’ll leave you and I alone now.” Case had no doubt Sarah would leave Gordon alone since she’d never been into him in the first place. It was more himself he was hopeful for.

“Who knows? She sure seems infatuated with you. I’m sorry I didn’t realize it before, man. I would’ve steered clear and saved us both a whole mess of trouble.”

“It’s okay,” Case said patting him on the back. “Just as long as this means you’re not gonna try to wreck me on Sunday.”

Gordon laughed. “Not on purpose. But I don’t know about Whiskey. He’s still pretty angry.”

“Yeah, Ol’ Whiskey’s another matter.” The older driver wasn’t at the event. Case had been thinking about reaching out to him to see if they could make amends, but every time he’d seen Whiskey, he’d glared and walked the other way. He’d rather have Whiskey out to get him than Jones, though, because Gordon was a good driver who was more capable of doing something like he had the other night—wrecking Case and winning—than Whiskey was who was liable to just wreck himself.

“It’s pretty big of you to reach out to me after I took a million dollars out of your pocket the other night. I might understand the issue now, but I’m not giving it back.”

Case laughed, even though he knew Gordon wasn’t joking. “It’s all racing, buddy. Don’t worry. I’ll be more than happy to take a big wad of cash out of your hands on Sunday.”

Joining in on the laughter, Gordon said, “Let’s get another drink,” and led Case over to the bar. Whether or not Gordon Jones was entirely trustworthy, Case wasn’t completely sure, but at least they’d made up for the time being.

Now there was just the question of what was Sarah up to with Stewart Antony. Changes were, it was nothing good. Case would have to keep an eye out for him on the track the next day during the dual qualifying runs. His plan was to stay in the back and keep from wrecking since he already had the pole, but if Sarah had another goon ready to do her bidding, things might not go as planned.
