Chapter 48 Daddy Decisions

Andrea’s pillow case was soaking wet, her eyes swollen, and her throat dry. She’d been crying for hours, and it seemed like there was nothing she could do to make herself stop. How was it possible that Case had gotten Sarah pregnant—twice? It just didn’t seem possible.

She rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling, wondering if there was anything she could do to keep Case for herself. Sure, it would be weird having Sarah be the mother of his child, and Andrea didn’t think she was ready to be a stepmom either. But she was definitely falling in love with Case. The idea of not seeing him anymore made her want to throw up, or start crying again, which she couldn’t do because she was all out of tears.

Kelsey had already gotten the entire sorted story. She’d brought Andrea some tissues, chocolate, and tea, and then left her to cry. Now, after a couple of hours of being alone to cry, she heard a light wrap on the door. “Come in.” Her voice broke and didn’t even sound recognizable to her.

“How are you doing?” Kelsey had a sympathetic look on her face. “I guess I don’t need to ask.”

“This sucks!” Andrea said, sitting up and pulling more tissues out of the box. “Of all the women in the world to knock up….”

“It does suck,” Kelsey agreed. “But… you can’t just let her win.”

“Let her win? What am I gonna do, Kelsey? Pretend I’m pregnant, too? That might be kind of hard to do since we haven’t done anything beyond kissing.”

Kelsey smirked. “No, but just because she’s carrying his baby, that doesn’t mean he has to marry her. Hell, this is Hollywood. How many kids do you think have two parents that live in the same zip code around here?”

“I know, but he said he thinks kids deserve to have their parents together. He seems to want to give it a try.”

“And he knows he can’t stand the woman, too, right? Remind him of that. Let him know you’re there for him, that you’ll do whatever you can to help him make it work.”

“But that means I’ll have to get along with Sarah. You know how hard that will be after what she did to me!”

“Maybe it’s time he knows what she did to you.”

Andrea arched an eyebrow. If she told Case what Sarah had done, surely he wouldn’t even consider getting back together with her, would he? She’d have to think about it. She had signed a nondisclosure agreement after all.

And she couldn’t help think of the poor baby in all of this. It was bad enough that Sarah would be the child’s mother. She’d hate to see another baby grow up without a father—like she had. Not that Case wouldn’t make every effort to be there. She knew he would. But the racing lifestyle was hard for anyone, and anytime you had a father and a mother that weren’t together, who lived on opposite sides of the country, with him working almost every weekend from February until November, it was going to be nearly impossible for him to be a part of that child’s life and maintain a relationship with Andrea. The unselfish thing for her to do would be to let him go.

Kelsey patted her leg, and said, “I’ll go fix you something to eat. Nakita and Taylor have called your cell about a hundred times. They want to take you out tonight.”

Andrea groaned. The last thing she wanted was to go out. Then again, getting completely wasted might be a good idea….

As Kelsey left, Andrea slid off the bed and went to her closet. Inside, she kept a box with keepsakes in it. She pulled it out and carried it over to the bed. She had to dig for a few minutes to find what she was looking for, but she located it. A picture of her dad, the only one she had. It had been taken when she was four or five. All she knew was that his name was Alan, and they had similar noses and the same color of eyes. “What happened to you, Alan?” she asked, not daring to call him dad.

She studied the picture a moment longer until she felt herself on the brink of tears again and then buried the picture back in the box and carried it to the closet. No child deserved to have an absent father—not even Sarah Lockton’s child.
