Chapter 54 Doctor, Doctor, Give Me the News

The blood draw only took a few moments. Sarah refused to let Case in the room with her, so he sat in the waiting room. Andrea knew what he was up to and had sent him a few texts, making sure he was okay. He told her he’d managed to get her inside. As long as the doctors were able to do their part, they’d find out the truth in a few weeks.

Sarah came out rubbing her arm. “Barbarians,” she muttered under her breath. “Can we go now?”

“Yep, I think so.” He looked at the receptionist.

“Yes, sir. We’ll get the paternity tests to you in four to six weeks,” she said with a smile.

“You’ll call me, too, right?” Sarah asked, holding her arm up as if she had been stabbed.

“Do we have your number?”

Sarah gave it to her, and she made a note on the file.

Thankful to have gotten that over with, Case led her out to the car. They could still make their reservations. She’d have to eat faster than normal if she was going to get back to the set on time. And later that evening, Case was picking up a friend from the airport. His racing partner, Charlie Drake, was coming into town for a few days. Confident he could make the schedule work, he headed to the restaurant.

They’d just sat down to order when Case’s cell phone rang.

“God is that Andrea?” Sarah asked, scowling at him.

“No. Hold on a second.” The caller ID said it was the clinic they’d just come from. Afraid they hadn’t gotten enough blood or something had gone wrong and he’d have to talk Sarah into going back. He got up and walked outside, thinking it would be best if she didn’t hear the conversation. “Hello?”

“Hi, Mr. Meyer?”

“Yes?” He held his breath, praying it wasn’t bad news.

“This is Dr. Connie Kline from Century OBGYN. I have some information I thought you might want to be made aware of.”

“What’s that?”

“Normally, I wouldn’t be able to give this information to you without speaking to the patient first, but since Ms. Lockton gave consent for us to share all medical records with you, I thought you should know we have results from her preliminary blood tests.”

“All ready? I thought you said it would take four to six weeks.”

“While that’s true for the paternity tests, we always do a preliminary pregnancy test before se send a sample out to the lab. You’d be surprised how many people come through here who have misread a pregnancy test.”

“I see. And what did you find?”

“Mr. Meyer, I’m sorry to tell you that Ms. Lockton isn’t pregnant. In fact, there’s no elevated HCG levels at all, which indicates to me that she hasn’t been pregnant recently.”

“What’s that?” Case couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Sarah wasn’t pregnant? How could she lie to him?

“I’m so sorry for the bad news, sir, but she’s not pregnant, and it doesn’t appear as if it was a miscarriage either. I would guess she likely misread the pregnancy test.”

“But… she showed me ultrasound photos from a few weeks ago. The baby measured within the perimeters for her being four months pregnant.”

“Mr. Meyer, there’s simply no way that could be possible.”

Case took a deep breath. “All right. Thank you very much, Dr. Kline.”

“You’re welcome, Sir. We will go ahead and send the blood samples off for a second opinion, but I can tell you with 99.9 percent accuracy that Ms. Lockton is not pregnant.”

“All right. And will you be notifying her of that finding as well?”

“It’s my understanding that she left her number for us to notify her as well, so by law I will have to.”

“Can you give me an hour?”

“Actually, I was just about to take my lunch break.”

Case chuckled. “Thank you, Doctor.” He hung up and took a few more deep breaths, wondering how in the world he could confront Sarah with this. He ran a hand through his hair, suddenly questioning everything she’d ever told him. Had she even been pregnant the first time? Was it possible she’d faked that and the miscarriage, too? He’d hate to turn her potential pain into an accusation, but at the moment, he wouldn’t put anything beyond her.

Sucking in another lungful of air, Case headed back into the restaurant, hoping he would leave here without causing a scene. But he needed the truth. The entire truth.

As much as he hated knowing he wasn’t having a child, he was glad that he wouldn’t be tied to Sarah for the rest of his life. This would allow him to pursue his relationship with Andrea, too. He did want kids, but the idea of having them in a committed relationship with a woman he loved was much better than trying to force the situation to work with Sarah—something he now realized he’d never have to do.
