Chapter 41 The Hostess Without the Mostest
Dyan Dudson was one of the most well-known talk show hosts in Hollywood. Her show had been on for years, and she only talked to the most famous of actors or up and coming stars. Andrea was nervous; she’d never been on her show before. But the request had only come a few days ago when another actor had backed out of their scheduled time for health reasons, so she hadn’t had a lot of time to think about it. Concentrating on being herself, having fun, and talking about the movie, she followed the production assistant out of the green room toward the stage.
Andrea had been on several talk shows over the years, so she knew they could be a lot of fun. They’d chat, show a clip of her in the movie, and then talk for a few more minutes. It would all be chill—no worries.
When Dyan said, “Please welcome an up and coming star, Andrea Sparks!” everyone clapped. Andrea walked out with a true smile on her face waving to everyone her red hair catching the lights. She wore a white, fitted dress with a short skirt that showed off her legs and made her look more tan than usual. She hugged Dyan and then took the seat next to her.
“Welcome, Andrea. How are you?” Dyan asked with a smile. Her short blonde hair had a streak of gray in it, and Andrea noticed she looked slightly older in person than on TV.
“I’m great. Thank you so much for having me.”
“We are excited that you’re here. Everyone is talking about your new movie, Shadows of Silence. I saw it a few weeks ago. You did a great job in it.”
“Thank you,” Andrea said, color coming to her face as the crowd cheered in agreement. “It was a lot of fun to make, and Stella Croy is an excellent actress to work with.”
“Yes, she’s great. Stella and I go way back. She’s a wonderful person. Tell us a little bit about the movie and the part you play.”
“Well, I play Stella’s daughter, Careena. It’s about a woman, played by Stella, whose husband is involved in a crime ring, only she doesn’t know it. When she finds out, she has to decide whether or not to help him or turn him in.”
“Such an interesting concept. And you play the daughter?”
“Yes. So, my character is sort of caught in the middle. She loves her dad and doesn’t want to see him get in trouble, but she also thinks what he’s doing is wrong. It was a lot of fun to play such a complex role.”
“Great, great. We have a clip. Do you want to tell us what we’re about to see.”
“Sure.” Andrea knew it was the same clip they had showed on every talk show she’d been on while promoting the movie. “This is Careen talking to her mom about what she thinks they should do.”
“All right. Let’s take a look.”
Andrea watched the first few seconds of the clip but then looked away. She’d rather watch the faces of the audience members than herself. She loved to see how enthralled they looked, watching the short clip from the film. When it was done, they all clapped and cheered.
“Great job, Andrea,” Dyan said.
“Thank you.”
“We’re going to take a short break, but we’ll be back with more from Andrea Sparks right after this.”
Andrea was surprised they were doing a second segment with her. Normally, she only got a few minutes. As the show went to commercial, Dyan stood up and started talking to one of the production assistants. She couldn’t hear what they were saying. Makeup came out and gave her a fresh coat of powder, and then Dyan resumed her seat, and they were live again.
The crowd clapped them in, and Dyan folded her arms. “Now tell us what you’re working on next?”
“Oh, it’s an historical piece. It’s called Captured by the Rogue. I play an heiress whose taken prisoner aboard a pirate ship. I have to fight to get back to my family, but the pirate captain is so handsome, there’s a chance I might not want to leave.” That got a chuckle out of the audience.
“And who plays the pirate captain?”
“I guess you’ll just have to wait to find out.” In actuality, Andrea wasn’t sure if she was at liberty to say. She hadn’t expected to answer questions about the new movie.
“We do know that Sarah Lockton has taken a small role in the movie recently. What are your feelings on that?”
Andrea felt her stomach tighten. She also wasn’t prepared to answer questions about Sarah. She thought it said in her agreement that interviewers were not allowed to ask about Sarah. It was too late now. She managed a smile. “It’ll be interesting. Sarah is a great actress.”
“But the two of you have a past that hasn’t been so great.” Dyan was pushing her now, and Andrea didn’t appreciate it.
“The past is the past.”
“What about Case Meyer? Do you think Sarah just took this role because you’re dating her ex-boyfriend?”
Now, Andrea a lump rising up the back of her throat as she contemplated how to get out of this situation while saving face and not choke to death trying to breath. “It’s true Case and I have spent some time together, but it isn’t as if we’re in a relationship….”
“But you are dating? He’s in LA right now, isn’t he? Because of you?”
“Cas is house sitting for a friend.” She still had a smile on her face. “We’ve spent some time together, but we’re not dating. Sarah is a mature, professional. I’m sure she’s handling it just fine.”
“Good. That’s good to know.” Dyan actually looked disappointed that she hadn’t been able to break Andrea. “Well, Andrea, it has been great speaking with you. Best of luck on the new movie.”
“Thank you.”
“Andrea Sparks everybody! We’ll be right back!”
The crowd applauded as Andrea hastily stood, gave Dyan a quick hug to thank her because that was expected, and then rushed off set, desperate to find Kelsey and call her agent, Myles, who had set this up for her. Someone needed to give her answers. Now.
