Chapter 175 Lunch and a Confession
Having lunch with Sarah wouldn’t normally be something Andrea would look forward to, but getting off of the set when Wilma was in the middle of a tirade was a good thing, even if it did mean she had to sit across from her former enemy.
Things had been better between the two of them recently, though. Ever since Andrea had bailed Sarah out of jail, their relationship had changed. Taking the high road that day had really paid off for Andrea, and while she would probably never completely trust Sarah, at least she somewhat enjoyed her company now.
“What did you want to talk about?” Andrea asked between bites of her pasta salad.
Sarah finished chewing the salad that was in her mouth. “Well, a couple of things,” she said after swallowing. “First of all, I wanted to let you know I’m really sorry about the wreck at Pocono. That was all Whiskey, not me. He grabbed the wheel and used the car as a weapon.”
“It’s okay. I figured as much when I saw how mad you were at him. You had a chance to finish well until the wreck.”
“I really wish I would’ve gotten just about anyone else in the world as my driver. He was useless. And I’m pretty sure he was drinking before the race.”
“You’re kidding!” Andrea’s eyes bulged.
“Either that or his parents named him Whiskey because that’s just what he smells like.”
Andrea covered her mouth to keep from laughing too loudly. “Well, maybe you’ll have another chance next year. At least the charity benefited from you racing anyway—even if you didn’t win.”
“True. But… I’m not sure I’ll be able to next year. I, uh, think I’m going to break up with Stewart.” Sarah swirled her drink around for a moment and then took a drink, like she wasn’t sure she should’ve said that out loud.
“Really?” Andrea was surprised to hear that. It did seem like Sarah had just jumped into that relationship because of Case, but she and Stewart seemed to get along together well. She’d definitely been concerned when he’d been in the wreck and his car was on fire. Andrea could tell by her expression. “Why is that?”
Sarah shrugged. “I just don’t like him as much as I should to be spending so much time at the racetrack. I don’t have to tell you what a strain it can be. I’d rather spend my off-time relaxing. Besides, I just took a part in a film that’s going to be shooting overseas for most of the summer, so I wouldn’t be able to see him that much. I just wanted to tell you. I feel like I need to own up to the fact that I just started dating Stewart—and Gordo—because I wanted to hang around where Case was. I hope you’ll believe me when I say I’m over him now. It was hard, but it’s true. I want the two of you to be happy.”
Andrea wasn’t sure what to say. She reached across the table and took her half-sister’s hand. “Thank you, Sarah. I’m sure that has to be hard for you to say—I mean that you’re over him. It means a lot to me.”
“A few months ago, I wouldn’t have been able to say it, but now that I realize you and I are family, and I know that the way I was behaving before was immature and dangerous. It was because of me that Cam lost his mind and tried to kill you—twice. That’s a lot of responsibility to carry on my shoulders, and I don’t ever want to be faced with it again.”
Andrea squeezed Sarah’s hand. “Sarah, it’s hard to believe we’ve come as far as we have in such a small amount of time, but I’m so glad that you and I don’t hate each other anymore. We both spent too much time and energy trying to get at each other. I wish nothing but the best for you, in both your career and with love. We are family, and if there’s anything I can do to help you, please let me know.”
“Same,” Sarah said with a smile. “I have been so much happier since I’ve learned to let my anger and frustration go. I do want to ask you something, though.”
Raising an eyebrow, Andrea asked, “What’s that?”
Sarah had a crooked grin on her face as she asked, “Would you be angry at me if I dated a certain ex-boyfriend of yours?”
“Which one?” Andrea smirked back at her.
“Well, a certain Italian stallion may be staring in the movie I just signed up for. So….”
“Leo?” Andrea asked. Then, she began to laugh. “Girl, if you wanna ride that stallion, you go for it. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you if he breaks your heart and talks dirty about you all over the media.”
“Oh, I know what he’s capable of. I followed all of that. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be the one to love him and leave him.” She winked, and Andrea laughed.
“Or maybe the two of you will be perfect for each other. At least you don’t have your hatred of me in common anymore. I hope he doesn’t convince you to start hating me again.”
“Nope. Not possible. That’s all over with now.”
With a smile, Andrea nodded in agreement, hoping she was right to think she could trust Sarah now. She still wouldn’t turn her back on the woman in a dark alley, but at least they were on speaking terms now, and that was a lot of progress.
