Chapter 91 The Truth About the Past

Andrea took a deep breath and considered how to go about telling her story. “I signed a nondisclosure order with the movie company promising I wouldn’t discuss what happened with anyone, but under the circumstances, I feel that you should know.”

“I’m sure the nondisclosure wouldn’t apply under these circumstances,” Officer Gonzalez assured her, his face turning from skeptical to concerned as Andrea puzzled through the right words to use.

“When Sarah and I made our last movie together, she was jealous that I’d gotten a part she’d wanted in a different movie. She went out of her way to harass me. It was something new every day on set.”

“That’s annoying but hardly illegal,” Officer Buress noted.

Andrea nodded. “Yes, but then one day, I was drinking a cup of coffee between takes and suddenly my throat started burning. I started coughing and gagging, and then my throat started hurting so badly, I felt like it was ripped to shreds.”

“What in the world happened?” Case asked, concern written all over his handsome face.

“I looked down in my coffee cup and realized there were tiny shards of metal in my coffee. I’d drank several of them. I started coughing up blood. I immediately went to the hospital, and they had to surgically remove hundreds of slivers of metal from my throat. But what was worse was she’d also put a watch battery in my coffee, and I’d swallowed that, too. Those suckers act like magnets in your body. With all the metal in there as well, it ripped a hole in my esophagus. It took months for it to heal. I couldn’t talk at all for a few weeks, my throat was so messed up. I almost lost my ability to speak at all. The doctors said I could’ve died.”

“Oh, my God!” Case exclaimed, his voice quiet, even though he was clearly livid. “Why didn’t you tell me before?”

With a shrug, Andrea said, “I wanted to tell you, but I wasn’t supposed to. And then… I wasn’t sure it mattered any more. Sarah has still been mean—like putting itching powder in my costumes and trying to make it look like I was kissing a costar--but she hadn’t tried to kill me again. Until now.”

“So you feel that Ms. Lockton may have put this plan in place for you to drown?” Officer Gonzalez verified. He looked surprised when Andrea told him the initial story, but now his face was all back to business.

“Yes, Officer, I do. I think if you do some investigating, you’ll find a link between Sarah Lockton and this Sven person—if that’s even his real name.”

The officers exchanged glances again. “We will look into it, Ms. Sparks,” Officer Buress said with a nod. “Just keep in mind, it will be difficult to prove Ms. Lockton had anything to do with this. We suggest you keep your distance from her in the meantime.”

“Yes, Officer, I always do,” Andrea replied, although that wasn’t always the case. She wasn’t always able to. She’d have to make sure her security was even more beefed up and that someone had their eyes on her all of the time.

“We’ll be in touch, Ms. Sparks. Thank you for your time,” Officer Gonzalez said with a nod of gratefulness.

“Thank you both,” Andrea replied, happy that they’d heard her out.

“I’ll walk you out,” Case said, standing and walking with the officers to the hospital room door. Andrea didn’t like the way her hand suddenly felt so empty without his in it, but she was glad he was going to talk to them again in the hallway. Sometimes, she felt as if it was easier for a man to get others to hear him than it was a woman, and if Case put some muscle behind her request to investigate, maybe the officers would.

Closing her eyes, Andrea tried to rest. It had been an eventful day, and nothing like she’d imagined it would be earlier that morning. The bottom line was, she couldn’t trust Sarah—no matter what. It was sad, but it was true. Her own half-sister had tried to kill her again. It seemed the woman would stop at nothing until Case was hers and Andrea was dead. While Sarah would never get the first of those wishes, she was getting closer and closer to the second with each attempt.
