Chapter 92 Bad Timing
Case walked out into the hallway with the officers because he wanted to reiterate how important it was that they take Andrea’s concerns seriously. Once they were out of her earshot, he said, “Thank you both for coming in to speak to her.”
“Of course,” Officer Gonzalez said. “That’s our job.”
“I know you’ll do a thorough investigation of this Sven person and look into the possibility that Sarah Lockton is involved in this. She and Andrea have always had issues, but now that I’m dating Andrea, I’m afraid it’s worse.”
“Why is that?” Officer Buress asked.
“Because I used to date Sarah,” he explained. “She faked a pregnancy and a miscarriage when we were dating, and even after we broke up, she faked another pregnancy. She’s not stable, at least not right now. She constantly goes out of her way to try and sabotage Andrea, even going so far as to start dating another racecar driver so that she has a reason to be at the race track. She showed up this weekend and tried to make it look as if Andrea knocked her down during a driver photoshoot. She really is willing to do anything to get what she wants.”
The officers looked at each other, and Case could tell they were taking the possibility that Sarah was involved more seriously now. “We’ll definitely look into it.”
Another idea popped into Case’s head. “You know, Sarah is actually the one who called me earlier to tell me that Andrea was in trouble. But… she didn’t tell me that they were taking her to the hospital because she nearly drowned. She said she was dead.”
“What? If that were the case, how would she know that?” Officer Gonzalez asked.
“I don’t have any idea how she knew any of it. According to her, a friend that was on set had called to tell her, though I don’t know that Sarah has any close friends working on the movie Andrea was filming today, and wouldn’t the people on set know that Andrea wasn’t dead? It makes no sense that Sarah would try to convince me she was dead.” Case hadn’t had time to try to unravel Sarah’s reason for calling earlier, he’d been so upset about Andrea, but now he was beginning to wonder if there was more to it.
“What time did she call?” Officer Buress asked, her notepad and pen out again.
Case pulled out his phone and looked at the time Sarah had called him. “Her first call, the one I missed, was at 2:32. That’s Eastern time, though, so 11:32 LA time. I finally spoke to her at 2:45.”
“Which would be 11:45 our time,” Officer Gonzalez said, stroking his chin. “What time did Andrea arrive at the hospital?”
“Not until 12:15,” Officer Bures answered, looking at her notes. “It sure took a long time for the ambulance to get there and get her here.”
“Unless… Sarah called before the incident even happened. We’ll have to check the timestamps on the videos to see if we can figure out exactly what time Andrea went under, when she was pulled out, and when the ambulance was called. If Sarah’s phone call to you was earlier than that, well, that’s pretty suspicious.” Officer Gonzalez had both hands on his hips as he puzzled through the situation.
“Yes, it is suspicious,” Case agreed. “Thanks again for your time.” He shook both of their hands and let them go, walking back into the room.
Andrea looked so peaceful with her eyes closed on the bed, he decided not to tell her about his suspicions about Sarah's phone call, not right now anyway, not while she was finally resting. He took his seat next to her, folded her hand between his, and let her sleep. A smile came over her face at his touch, and he was so thankful she was all right.
If Sarah had really instigated this and arranged for this Sven person to drown Andrea, he would never be able to forgive her. He couldn’t believe she’d tried to kill her once already with the shards of metal and the battery. How Andrea had known for certain it was Sarah, he couldn’t be sure, but he couldn’t imagine anyone else could be so evil. Sarah was awful, and he couldn’t believe he’d ever dated her. Thank God he’d gotten free of her. Now, he just had to keep her from ever hurting Andrea again.
