Chapter 93 An Unexpected Visit

The sun was bright as Andrea blinked her eyes, wondering what time it was. Straining to see the clock by the side of the hospital bed, she discovered it was past 11:00 in the morning. She must’ve fallen back to sleep. Earlier that morning, she’d insisted Case leave and go back to Florida so he didn’t miss anything else for Daytona. He was reluctant to go, but the fact that Andrea had both of her bodyguards waiting outside of her door made him feel better.

Case had spent the whole night in her room, never leaving her side. Despite the uncomfortable chair and the fact that he had work to do today, he wouldn’t budge, not even to sleep on a cot or in a more comfortable chair. Thinking about how sweet he was brought tears to her eyes. She really had gotten so lucky with him.

The nurse had said she could likely go home around noon. Andrea was hopeful that was still the case. It was bad enough she wasn’t allowed to go back to the set for a few days. She hated being in the hospital. At least at home she could rest without the beeping of machines and footsteps in the hallway. What she really wanted was to be back on set, but Cam insisted she needed to recover.

The director had come by the evening before, apologizing profusely for not realizing what was happening earlier. There was no view of what was happening under the water, but he said he should’ve known if she hadn’t gotten into the camera’s view further down the boat, she needed help. He hadn’t reacted fast enough, and he was sorry, even though he still seemed to be under the impression her dress had become hooked under the water when he first arrived. By the time he’d left, though, Andrea had told him that wasn’t the case and that he needed to make sure Sven was never allowed back on his set, no matter what the investigation showed.

Kelsey was asleep in the comfier chair against the wall, and Andrea hated to wake her, but she really wanted to know if she was still going to be released soon. She could press the button for the nurse, and they’d come in to see what she needed so she could ask then, but that would definitely wake Kelsey up.

Andrea could’ve picked up her phone and checked social media to pass the time, but she didn’t want to see what people were saying about her. Chances were, none of it was the truth, or even the lie that had been perpetuated by Sven. Stories like this tended to become monsters that took on a life of their own, and she was better off not knowing what the story was.

A knock on the door drew her attention. She was shocked to see a large bouquet of flowers coming through since Case had already sent her some (as had her parents, whom she’d made swear they wouldn’t come to California, and a few friends, including Charlie) but this bouquet was followed by her father’s unfamiliar face.

“Hi, Andrea,” he said, bringing the flowers over and setting them next to the others on a window sill. Her hospital room was about to be as full as her bedroom had been when Case brought all of the poinsettias over before Christmas.

“What are you doing here?” She hoped she didn’t sound rude, but she was shocked. She thought she’d made it clear she didn’t want to see him again. Ever.

Kelsey was awake now. She blinked a few times and sat up. Andrea could see she was ready to go get security if needed, but Andrea held up her hand for her friend to wait.

“I just wanted to see if you were all right. Apparently, what happened to you yesterday was only a few degrees away from disaster. That didn’t set right with me. I had to come and see you.”

His words were sweet, even if his history wasn’t. “I’m fine, thank you,” she said, her voice softer than before.

“I’m so glad to hear that. Listen, Andrea, I know you said you don’t want to see me, and I don’t blame you. But I am hopeful you will change your mind. I think you’re pretty amazing—not just as an actress, but as a person. I’ve done some reading since we had lunch. I read how you give so much of your income to charities, that you volunteer, that you’re always helping other aspiring actresses. You’re remarkable, and I really do hope that someday I get a chance to know you.”

“You gave up that chance a long time ago.” Andrea’s voice was more full of sadness than anger now.

“I know I did. And I don’t blame you if you never want to give me another chance. But I would love it if you would. I won’t take up any more of your time. I just wanted you to know I was thinking of you. I love you, Andrea. I really do.” He gave her a soft smile and then turned to go.

Andrea watched him go and a wave of confusion washed over her. He seemed to sincerely want to know her, and Andrea had longed to know him for so long, it was tempting to forgive him and let him in. She also remembered the advice she’d been given—that forgiveness was for herself, not for him.

She had a lot more to think about all of a sudden, not just what she should do about Sarah, but what she should do about her father, too, and none of the answers were going to be simple.
