Chapter 23 Sarah Unhinged

Case set the presents he’d bought down on the dresser in his room. His phone was ringing again, and he knew who it was. She’d already called at least a dozen time, and he hadn’t answered once. Every voicemail she left was even more vile. Why in the world she thought his private life was any of her business, he couldn’t say, but he decided it was time to get the conversation over with already and answered the phone. “Hi, Sarah.”

“What the heck are you doing, Case? Did you think I wouldn’t see? It’s all over the freaking media. You’ve got to be sh*tting me, Case!”

“Calm down, Sarah. I’m really not sure why you continue to concern yourself with what I do. We’ve been broken up for over three months.”

“Yeah, well, not because I wanted it that way, Case. Remember? You broke up with me!”

He definitely did remember that. He also remembered why. For all of the explanations he’d tried to give Andrea recently about how Sarah’s past affected her attitude now, he just hadn’t been able to handle her anymore. If he was honest with himself, he never would've dated Sarah seriously in the first place if it hadn't been for what happened early on in their relationship. Seeing how that affected her, how she cried herself to sleep every night, he'd tried to make it work. But then... they simply weren't meant to be together. He'd had to break it off.

Case had always been a fan of Andrea’s. The fact that he’d even gone out with Sarah to begin with knowing how much she hated Andrea was a choice he often wished he hadn’t made. It wasn’t just her ugly attitude toward Andrea that had stuck out to him, though. She was rude to other people, too, especially people she thought she was better than, like waiters and cashiers. He couldn’t handle all of that anymore. Despite what they'd gone through together, he couldn't fit a square peg into a round hole and had finally broken it off. That didn’t prevent Sarah from sticking her nose in his business way more than she should.

“Sarah, what you saw is not exactly what it looked like. Andrea’s grandfather was sick in the hospital. I met her at the airport, and gave her a ride....”

“You shouldn’t have, Case! You know how awful she is! She stole that role from me. It was supposed to be mine! You know she slept with the director to get it.”

“I know you think she did.” Case had never seen any evidence to support Sarah’s assumption that Andrea had slept with the director to get the part Sarah wanted in the movie Windswept. He’d always thought Andrea was a better actress than Sarah and assumed she’d gotten the part because of her skill and nothing else. The results showed she’d earned it. The movie was spectacular, and Andrea was wonderful in it.

“So now you’re letting her brainwash you into thinking she’s not a horrible person?”

“She’s not a horrible person, Sarah. Stop saying things like that. You don’t even really know her.”

“I know her well enough, Case. I know plenty of people who have worked with her. She’s awful! You think she’s all sweet and innocent, but she’s not. Just look at what her ex-boyfriends have to say about her. Do you want to end up like one of those sorry b*stards?”

Ignoring most of what she’d said, Case reiterated, “I don’t think listening to the rumors her ex-boyfriends are spreading is the same as getting to know her, Sarah.”

“Well, I guess I’ll just have to get to know her. I wasn’t going to audition for that stupid pirate movie she’s staring in, but I’m going to now. That’ll teach you to date the people I hate. I’ll make both of your lives a living hell. That's just the beginning, Case. Keep seeing her, and you'll regret the day the two of you met.”

“Sarah, auditioning for the movie is not a good idea. Please think about this. You really don’t want to do that--or anything else to stir up trouble." Why was she so insistent on ruining Andrea's career?

“Oh, yes, I do. And oh, yes, I will. Unless you break up with her and leave her house right now.”

“I can’t do that, Sarah....” He was going to say he couldn’t break up with her because they weren’t dating, but Sarah didn’t let him finish.

“Then consider it done! I’ll do whatever I have to to get that part!”

“Sarah! Sarah?” She’d hung up. Case sat down on the edge of the bed, his phone in his hand, and his head down. Maybe Andrea was right to be upset.

The door creaked open, and he realized Andrea had been eavesdropping. She was standing in the doorway with her arms folded, a determined look on her face. Case wasn’t sure what he’d gotten himself into, but he had a feeling Andrea wasn’t going to take anything from Sarah without putting up a fight, and he was going to be in the middle of it.
