Chapter 85 Pushed by a Pesky Pirate

Saying goodbye to Case and getting back on the plane had been difficult. Over the weekend, the two of them had gotten so close to each other. Andrea felt at home with him, like his place was hers, like they were a happy family. Now, as his jet landed in LA to bring her back home, she felt like the week was likely to drag on forever until she could see him again.

Next weekend, she’d be going to Daytona to see him drive in the shootout. That should be a lot of fun, as long as Sarah left them alone. There was also the issue with Whiskey Rogers to think about. The driver had ended up getting his face pretty messed up in the bar brawl—even worse than Travis’s whooping at the club, and the driver had managed to get himself arrested. He wasn’t taking responsibility, though. He was saying that it was Case’s fault, that he’d thrown the first punch, and if the driver wasn’t so young and popular, he would’ve been the one getting arrested. Andrea hoped that Whiskey wouldn’t take it out on Case on the race track. At least the older driver hadn’t qualified for the shootout.

The next two weeks at Daytona would be busy for Case. Not only did he have the shoot out on Saturday, qualifying was on Sunday, and then the dual races were on Thursday that also had to do with where the cars would line up for the next Sunday, when the biggest race of the season would take place. As Andrea got off of his plane, she felt a distance from him that was more than miles. She’d have to figure out how to let him have the time and space he needed in order to focus on his racing, which would be hard. She missed him already.

But she had a movie to make. On set, she was greeted by Stephon and Navaeh who went about getting her camera ready. Sarah wasn’t on set that day, so at least there was that to make the situation better. The only thing was… in today’s scene, the villain, played by Lance, pushed Andrea’s character over the side of the boat into the ocean—which meant she’d be spending the entire day falling off of the boat into a large vat of water, big enough to resemble the sea when the camera was zoomed in, including large waves.

She wasn’t looking forward to it. The vat was deep, at least 12 feet. They would use a smaller replica of the ship for the part of the scene that took place aboard the pirate ship, and then she’d fall into what was likely to be cold water, pretend to nearly drowned—hopefully it would be pretend—get out, dry off, and do it all again at least five or six times if all went as planned. Andrea could swim, and she knew there would be life guards nearby to grab her and even a scuba diver under the ship if she needed him, but it was still bound to be uncomfortable.

But she was a professional, and she would do what she needed to in order to get the scene.

“Girl, you’re going to be the prettiest lass to ever be tossed overboard,” Stephon said while he was finishing her makeup.

“Thank you.” Andrea couldn’t help but smile at him, even though she was nervous.

“You know Cam always hires the best scuba divers to keep his actors safe, right? And you know how to swim, don’t you?” Navaeh asked, hanging another version of the costume Andrea was wearing on a hook near where Stephon was working on her. Once she dried off, she’d change into that one. She had three different costumes so one could always be drying.

“I do,” Andrea confirmed.

“Then you don’t have anything to worry about.” Stephon’s smile was meant to be reassuring, but Andrea was starting to get a funny feeling in her gut. At least Sarah wasn’t there. She’d feel much worse if her half-sister were lurking in the shadows again.

Once Andrea was ready, she went over to where Cam was standing with the scuba driver in front of the giant vat with a portion of a pirate ship sticking out of it. Cam was pointing and gesturing, and the diver was nodding. He was already completely ready to go, his face covered by his wet suit and goggles. Andrea thought that was weird. Normally, they didn’t get completely ready to dive in until the film crew was ready to go.

“Andrea, this is Sven. He’ll make sure you’re safe.”

“Hi,” Andrea said to the tall man in the black suit. He only nodded. She wondered if he spoke English. She was used to working with the same divers on Cam’s movies and wondered where George or Stan were.

As if reading her mind, Cam said, “I was expecting George today, but Sven showed up instead. Which is fine. He’s a professional.”

Andrea nodded, thinking Cam would know. She had no idea how the company decided who to send when it came to this sort of crew member.

“Are you ready to get started?” Cam asked Andrea.

With as much confidence as she could muster, she said, “Yes.” Sven was tall and strong. She had no doubt he could keep her safe in the water—if he wanted to.
