Chapter 33 All That Glitters
Somehow, Andrea managed to survive the next few days without Mrs. Meyer running her out of town or making her feel hated, though most of that was because Andrea did her best to stay out of the same room with the woman, only seeing her at dinner. Most of the time she’d spent with Case—playing cards and board games, exploring the city, and watching movies. The more time she spent with him, the more she began to think perhaps she’d jumped to conclusions about him being in with Sarah to take her out. But she wasn’t completely willing to trust him either.
They’d talked a bit about what to do after New Year’s Eve. Case had three weeks before he had to be back in North Carolina to start working with his team to prepare for the upcoming racing season. He had originally thought he’d spend most of that time in Seattle, as long as he could tolerate being around his mom that long, but when Andrea brought up the possibility of him spending some time in LA with her, he liked the idea.
Now, standing in front of the mirror, slipping her earring into place and double checking her makeup was perfect, she hoped they could have a night to remember together. Perhaps she shouldn’t have mentioned him coming to California with her just yet, but it had happened in a moment when they were truly enjoying themselves, playing a game and laughing, and she couldn’t think of being without him.
If the ball went well, and they kissed at midnight, would she be able to say goodbye?
She took a deep breath and admired herself in her new dress. Asking him to come with her meant trusting him, and most of her felt willing to do that at the moment, but there was still that little piece that questioned how anyone could be as perfect as Case appeared to be.
Andrea wished she knew what had happened between him and Sarah. His mother seemed to think Andrea had somehow gotten between them, but that was ridiculous. She’d stayed as far away from Sarah Lockton as humanly possible over the last few years. What had it been that had made Case tell Sarah it was over?
A knock on her door made the question slip from mind. “Yes?”
Case poked his head in. “Can I come in?”
“Sure.”
He stepped into the room looking sexy as hell in a stylish tuxedo. He could’ve been James Bond or a prince with his hair perfectly styled, clean shaven and smelling like heaven. He had a box in his hand, and Andrea knew immediately it was more jewelry. She couldn’t think of a word to say at the moment, so she only stared at him, mesmerized.
“I saw this the other day when I was out, and I thought it would look perfect with your gown.” He opened the box to show her yet another diamond necklace, though this one was much more elegant. Andrea gasped; she couldn’t even fathom how much it must cost.
“It’s unbelievable….”
“May I?” Case asked.
Andrea nodded, and he took it out of the box, draping the diamonds around her neck like a thousand twinkling ice cycles.
When it was fastened, he rested his hands on her shoulders and stared at their reflection together in the mirror. She backed into him, resting her head on his chest. His hands slid down her arms and around her waist. Andrea breathed him in, closing her eyes and feeling her body melding into his.
Case’s breath caressed her ear, his nose playing against her flesh as he lowered his head, his lips hovering near her neck. She wanted to feel his mouth on her, to surrender to him completely.
It only lasted a moment before he pulled away. Putting some space between them, Case said, “Are you ready to go?”
Andrea nodded, her legs wobbly beneath her skirt. If he did that to her again, she’d be a puddle on the floor. The man had a pull over her like no one ever had before. Even if she was walking into a set-up at this point, she couldn’t see herself managing to pull away. Case Meyer had cast a spell over her, one she didn’t think she’d ever be able to break free from.
He escorted her down the stairs to a waiting limo, and Andrea could clearly see their two world merging together. He’d accompany her to balls and parties, awards ceremonies, and interviews whenever he could. She would go to his races whenever she had a free weekend, sit on top of the pit box, cheer like a maniac every single lap. This could work. They could be together….
If she was certain she could trust him. At this point, she’d just have to hold her breath and pray he didn’t disappoint her because her will to fight Case Meyer off was all but broken and gone.
