Chapter 172Kelsey's Secret

It was a wonder Stewart wasn’t covered in burns. Thanks to Case’s quick thinking, he had actually been fine. He was out of the race, though. Case ended up finishing third, which wasn’t too bad. Andrea was proud of him. Sitting in the makeup chair Monday morning, she thought about how heroic he had been to run over there and drag Stewart from that fiery car. It had been impressive. And dangerous. She prayed Case was never in such a situation again

“That Whiskey Rogers should be banned from racing,” Stephon was saying as he finished her makeup.

“Did you watch the race yesterday?” Andrea was proud of him for even knowing that lesser-known driver’s name.

“Girl, of course I did. I’ve been watching whenever I can, hoping to catch a glimpse of you. Your hair was on point yesterday, too, by the way.”

Andrea giggled. “Thanks. I agree. Whiskey is a hazard to everyone. He said he hadn’t meant to crash Stewart, but taking out the leader with so few laps to go takes balls, and not in a good way.”

“Preach it, girl. I bet all of the other drivers hate him.”

“He doesn’t have a lot of friends at this point.” After the race, she’d heard a lot of people calling for Whiskey to retire. He wasn’t any good now, and in fact, she wasn’t sure he’d ever been any good. “But he’s just the sort of pain in the rear end that never goes away.”

That made Stephon laugh, and Andrea probably would’ve joined in if something odd hadn’t caught her attention at that exact moment. Off in the distance, across the soundstage, she saw Kelsey walking alongside Rick, her biggest brute of a bodyguard. He was ex-military and had also served as a police officer. Andrea really liked him—but not as much as Kelsey did. He kissed her quickly and then headed off across the stage, likely to go coordinate with the other two guards.

“What was that?” Andrea asked aloud.

“What was what, sugar?” Stephon asked, looking around.

“Oh, uh, I just saw Rick and Kelsey kissing.”

“Yeah—and?”

“Wait—are they a couple? How come she didn’t say anything? How come you didn’t say anything?”

“I figured you knew. She’s your right hand girl. And she lives in your apartment. How can you not know?”

“I don’t know,” Andrea admitted. “I guess I’ve been so wound up in my own life recently she decided not to tell me. Well, good for her. I like Rick.”

“He’s hot, that’s for sure,” Stephon agreed. “You should tell her it’s fine for him to come over and hangout. I bet she’s been going out a lot lately.”

“I hadn’t thought about that either, but yeah, you’re right. She has been.”

“And I thought the two of you were friends.”
Andrea nudged him in the arm. “Be nice!” Stephon laughed. She knew he was teasing, but she felt bad. How had she missed out on something so important? It was too bad Kelsey hadn’t told her. She definitely didn’t mind if Rick hung out even when he wasn’t at her apartment on duty. It would probably be a good idea if he hung out when he wasn’t on duty so that when he was on duty, he wouldn’t become distracted. Not that she didn’t trust him.

Still, she didn’t have bodyguards at her place much, only on days when she thought there was a chance something might happen, like on awards days. Perhaps she should make sure Rick also knew he was welcome to sleep over, if that was something the two of them had been discussing. Of course, she wouldn’t want to be nosy either.

“Where’s the race at this weekend?” Stephon asked, snapping her out of her thoughts.

“Charlotte. Which is awesome because we can stay at Case’s house instead of in the RV. My parents are coming, too, and Grandpa Jack.”

“Wow—won’t that be fun. And did you hear about that movie you were interested in?”

“Not yet,” Andrea replied with a frown. “But hopefully soon.”

“You’ll get it, girl. If you don’t, they’re crazy.”

That made her smile. “I sure hope so.” The sooner she got off of this set, the better.
