Chapter 178 Scene of the Crime

Blood was everywhere. Andrea looked down at the stain on her nightgown, watching it spread, but she knew the blood wasn’t hers.

It was Kelsey’s.

She realized Rick had shot Cam, and she was pretty sure he was dead. His body lay across from her on the floor, a pool of crimson growing beneath his head. Rick was on the phone, but the fact that she could already hear sirens in the background made her think that someone else had called the police.

“Kelsey, are you okay? Where are you hit?” Andrea asked, afraid to move her friend but needing to know if she was alive.

“My… shoulder.” Kelsey’s voice was weak as Andrea helped her roll over, keeping her friend’s head on her lap. Rick ran to the bathroom and came back a moment later with a towel. He held it against Kelsey’s shoulder and applied pressure.

“Take nice, slow, deep breaths,” Andrea said. “You’ll be okay.”

“The ambulance is on the way.” Rick had tears in his eyes as he looked down at her. “Just keep breathing.”

“Did you get him?” Kelsey asked Rick.

“I did. Cam won’t be hurting anyone anymore.”

Andrea’s eyes immediately went to the body lying across from them. It was surreal, seeing him there, his arms and legs spread out as his head continued to bleed all over her carpet. Never in a million years would she have thought that they’d be in this position. Cam had been a professional director, a well-respected man who’d won many awards and done well for himself. Now, instead of standing trial for murder, possibly attempted-murder, he was dead.

A few minutes later, the police and ambulance workers arrived. Andrea had to back away to let them work on Kelsey. “She’ll be okay,” one of the emergency medical staff told Andrea. She let out a sigh of relief. At least Kelsey wasn’t going to die, too. She’d been very brave, coming into the room while Cam was pointing his gun. Kelsey had protected Andrea from the gunman. She deserved an award.

Officer Gonzalez and Officer Buress came in a few minutes later. Even though she’d only met them because of her near-death experience, Andrea was happy to see familiar faces.

“Miss Sparks, how are you?” Office Gonzalez asked.

Despite the blood all over her clothes, Andrea nodded and said, “I’m okay.”

They asked her questions about what had happened. When Kelsey was taken away to the ambulance, Andrea wanted to go with her, but she couldn’t go right away because they weren’t done ask her questions.

After about an hour of questioning, the officers were satisfied they had enough information from her. Rick had insisted on going to the hospital with Kelsey, so they’d have to finish questioning him later. “I’m sure he won’t be arrested,” Officer Buress said. “Clearly, this was a case of self-defense.”

Andrea nodded. It had definitely been that.

The coroner came and took Cam’s body away. Without Kelsey to help her, Andrea wasn’t sure what to do about the mess, but the police said they’d want it left the way it was until after they finished their investigation, which could take a few more days.

The police were still there taking photographs when Andrea went to take a shower so she could go to the hospital to check on Kelsey. She needed to call Case, too, but she knew she’d start crying the moment she heard his voice, so she waited until after she was clean, dressed, and in the back of a cab headed toward the hospital.

The phone rang and rang. She was sure he was asleep. It was past two o’clock in California, which meant it was past five in the morning where Case lived. Eventually, she decided to just leave him a message. “Case, call me as soon as you can. I’m okay, but something awful has happened. Love you.” She hung up, feeling the tears sting her eyes, as she knew they would. She hoped Case was sleeping peacefully, but it was still hard to feel like she was all alone in the world, speeding to the hospital to make sure her friend was okay and wondering if she could get the blood out of her carpet or if she’d have to move. Could she live in the same apartment after this? Probably not…
