Chapter 95 Eyes on You

His first practice of the day had just gotten over when Case’s phone started ringing. He’d been so excited to hear that Andrea was nominated for an award for her acting, he couldn’t wait to tell her how proud he was. Now, the phone was ringing, and he was thrilled to see it was her. “Hey, baby! Congratulations!”

“Thank you,” she said on the other end of the line. “I can’t believe it!”

“I’m so proud of you, but not at all surprised. You were so awesome in that movie. You’re always awesome in your movies, but that one was even better than usual.”

“You’re sweet. Thank you, babe. That means a lot to me. But… did you see who else is nominated?”

“Nobody important. Doesn’t matter. They’re not gonna win.” In the distance, Case saw Gordon Jones walking toward him with a large smile on his face. Something told him it had nothing to do with how fast his car was going into turn four.

“Yeah, but… Sarah’s going to rub it in my face if she beats me.”

“She won’t. Don’t worry about her,” he insisted.

“All right. Well, I need to go call my mom and then get on set. Thank you for believing in me, babe. It means the world to me.”

“Thanks for being my girl,” he replied. “God, I miss you so much.”

“I miss you, too. I’ll see you tomorrow night, though.”

“Thank goodness it’s almost Friday. Love you.”

“Love you, too.”

He hung up just in time for Gordo to stop in front of him, his arms folded across his chest. “Well, looks like we’ve got us another rivalry,” he said with a chuckle.

“I’m not sure I know what you mean.”

“Oh, come on, Case. Surely you must know both of our girls are up for awards against each other.”

“You know, I don’t really pay too much attention to what Sarah’s doing if I don’t have to,” Case replied with a shrug. “Good for her.”

Gordo readjusted so his hands were on his hips. “Now, I don’t believe that for one second, Case. I see how you look at her. I can’t blame you. She’s pretty as hell. She told me you’ve been hitting on her, too. I’m secure in our relationship, so it doesn’t bother me, but you should know I see it.”

Case shook his head. “I don’t know what she’s been telling you, but that’s not true. I’m not interested in Sarah at all, Gordo.” He considered mentioning to the other driver how Sarah had flashed him everything her maker had given her at the photoshoot, but it was obvious Gordo wouldn’t believe him anyway. “You can have her, man.”

Gordon chuckled. “I’m glad you’re saying that, but you should know, I’m watching you. I’ve got eyes everywhere, and I know you’re lying through your teeth.”

Shaking his head, Case said, “Whatever you want to believe, man.” He started to walk away when he decided to add, “You’re loose going out of two because you’re camber’s wrong on your back left. You need to tweak that a few degrees and it’ll give you the stickiness you need to stay in the gas.”

“Oh, okay. Thanks. I’ll just take your word for it.” Gordon rolled his eyes and turned around and walked away.

Case couldn’t help but let out a sigh of disgust. He really was trying to be helpful, but if Gordo didn’t want his help, screw him.

All was forgotten a few seconds later when Charlie came flying into the garage. “Case! Can you believe it! She did it!” He was whooping and hollering, and came right over to Case and patted him on the back like it was his girlfriend who’d been nominated for the biggest award in all of the movies.

“I heard,” Case said with a warm smile. “She’s really excited.”

“Gosh, I can’t wait to congratulate her. She deserves this so much.”

“I know. Have you called her? I’m sure she’d love to hear from you.” Case knew how fond Andrea was of Charlie. She thought of him like a big brother.

“I haven’t called her yet, but I will in a minute. I figure everyone’s callin’ her now.”

“You should definitely call her. She wants to hear from you, I’m sure.”

“Yeah, I’ll give her a call. In the meantime, I’m pushin’ in three but loose in four. Any tips?”

“Let’s go talk to your crew chief. I’ve had that happen before here, and we just played with air pressures and camber until we got it straightened out.”

“Awesome. Looked like you were really stickin’ in the corners, even in the draft.”

“It depends on who’s pushing me,” Case replied, and they both laughed, knowing that was true. At Daytona, you had to have friends, or you weren’t going anywhere but straight to the back. Case would do whatever he could to help Charlie get his car better so when the checkered flag dropped, they’d both be out front.
