Chapter 81 Don't Turn Your Back
“Charlie!” Andrea shouted, catching up to the giant driver back in the corridor. “How are you?”
He wrapped her in a tight bear hug, and Andrea giggled at his enthusiasm. “If it isn’t my girl Andrea! Man, I’ve been missing you. I’ve been fair to middlin’, and yourself?”
It had been a long time since she’d heard anyone use that particular wording to describe the fact that they were doing all right. “I’m great. It’s awesome to see you.”
“Are you in for the weekend?”
“Yes. I have to go back early Monday morning. But then, Case is so booked next week, it’s not even funny.”
“I know. With the shootout next Saturday night, we’ll be heading down to Daytona. There’s always a million things to do this time of year.”
“I can see that.”
He made a face. “I hate most of them, but this here’s actually a lot of fun for me. I love hamming it up for the camera. The funny thing is, they hardly ever use m footage anyhow ‘cause I rarely win—nor am I usually ahead when they go to a commercial break.”
“Oh, Charlie, stop it!” She swatted at him, but she knew most of what he was saying was true. It had been a while since he’d won a race. It wasn’t because he was a bad driver. It was just difficult to have two good racecar drivers on the same team and split everything equally so they both had a chance. Case was the better driver and got the better crew chief, pit crew, etc.
“You know it’s true,” he said, with a shrug. “But I’m plannin’ on winnin’ one this year.”
“I know you will.” She meant it, too. She had no doubt he could win if he put his mind to it.
“Where’s that b*tch half-sister of yours? Off tryin’ to pin the Black Plague on ya?”
Andrea rolled her eyes. “If I had been alive back then, I’m sure she’d find a way. I don’t know. She’s been making kissy faces at Gordo this whole time.”
Charlie shook his head. “You know, I saw him at somethin’ else the other day and had a minute to talk to him. She wasn’t in town yet. I said pointblank to his face, ‘You know yer new girl ain’t in this for you, right?’ He just shrugged and said, ‘But she’s got a nice a*s and a good wrack, so I don’t much care.’ Seriously? Who thinks that way?”
“Older guys looking for younger women, I guess.” Andrea wasn’t sure what could possibly possess Gordon Jones to date Sarah. But at least he was aware that he was being used. Otherwise, she might feel a little sorry for him.
“Well, it won’t last. She’s not gonna be happy bein’ this close to Case and not bein’ able to get at him. You best keep both eyes open.”
“I know. She already made it look like I knocked over the entire stylist’s area in one of the makeup rooms, and I don’t know if you actually saw the fake tripping bit or if you just jumped to my rescue, but thank you, and this is getting old.”
“I didn’t see it, but I know you didn’t push her. How you have kept from punchin’ her in the mouth all this time is beyond me.”
Andrea thought about how mad she’d been when Sarah knocked Kelsey to the ground the week before, how badly she’d wanted to punch her then. “It’s a challenge.”
“Well, you’re a good girl, Andrea, for not puttin’ her in her place. Just don’t let yer guard down. You know she’s always gonna be up to somethin’.”
“I know. Thanks.” Charlie’s words made her nervous that she’d left Case with Sarah for so long, but Gordon was right there. Surely, the woman wouldn’t do anything with her own boyfriend in the room, would she? “Maybe I should go keep an eye on her.”
“I can’t think of a d*mn thing the woman could do at the moment without you in there, but you’re probably right. I wouldn’t leave her unattended.”
With a deep breath, Andrea went back to check on Sarah. When she re-entered the larger warehouse space, she couldn’t believe her eyes! Of all of the things Sarah could’ve thought of to do, this one took the cake! She never would’ve thought even Sarah could stoop that low—but she was wrong. Sarah was pure evil—no two ways about it!
