Chapter 189 Mother of All Headaches

There were headaches, and then there were headaches. The next morning, Case woke up with a sharp pain in his head. He immediately reached to his nightstand and grabbed the medicine he’d set there the night before, taking two pills and a big gulp of water. The doctor had told him this would probably happen. The good news was he didn’t have a concussion.

“Are you okay?” Andrea asked, brushing his hair back from his forehead.

“I will be.” He grimaced at the pain and then lay back on his pillow. They’d gotten home late the night before and gone to bed almost immediately, Now, he wanted to go back to sleep, even though he knew Andrea’s family would be heading to the airport soon. At least she wouldn’t be leaving this time.

“I’m going to go downstairs and spend some time with my family. But you should stay here,” she said as if she had been reading his mind.

“I feel bad about that.”

“Don’t. You need to rest. You got hit by a car last night, Case. You’re lucky you’re not….”

“Dead?” he asked. “I know, Andrea. But I’m fine.”

“Thank goodness NASCAR finally took some action against Whiskey this time. That was long overdue.”

He agreed with that. Whiskey was banned for the rest of the season. That should make it nicer around the track, at least for a while. Stewart had been put on probation for fighting, but since he hadn’t actually hurt anyone, the way that Whiskey had, he was allowed to keep racing.

“Call me or text me if you need anything,” Andrea said as she kissed him and slid out of bed.

Case watched her head to the bathroom, assuming she’d take a shower and get dressed before she went downstairs. His eyes were heavy, and he wanted to go back to sleep.

But his phone was ringing. It was his mother. With a sigh, he decided he’d better answer it. He hadn’t talked to her the night before, only sent her a text that he was all right. She’d want to speak to him, though. May as well get it over with. “Hello?”

“Case, thank God. I thought you were dead,” Rhonda blurted.

“What are you talking about, Mom? I sent you a text. I’m fine.”

“I figured that text had come from Andrea, that she just wanted me to think that you were okay so I wouldn’t fight her on the life insurance policy.”

“Life insurance policy?” Case echoed. “What are you talking about?”

“Well, surely she’s taken out a hefty life insurance policy on you. That’s what her type usually does before they try to murder their lover.”

Case’s mouth dropped open. “Her type?” he repeated. “Mom, why in the world do you think Andrea is trying to kill me?”

“It makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? She fools you into thinking you should marry her, and the next day, you’re ‘accidentally’ killed by a speeding racecar.” He could hear the air quotes in the way she said “accidentally.”

“First of all, Mom, she didn’t trick me into marrying her. Secondly, even if she did have some sort of scheme, which she doesn’t, wouldn’t she make sure we were married first? And finally… Andrea had nothing to do with what happened on the track last night. That was an idiot racecar driver who does reckless things all the time and just got himself band from the track for the rest of the season.”

“That’s what she wants you to think, son, but I guarantee she’s been speaking to that Whiskey fellow, and they’re in this together. You shouldn’t marry her. She’s a gold digger.”

“Mom, she makes more than I do,” he pointed out.

“I don’t trust her.”

Case could hear Andrea in the bathroom and wanted to get off of the phone before she realized Rhonda knew about the wedding and was being difficult again. “Listen, Mom, you need to stay out of this, okay? I asked Andrea to marry me because I love you. The last thing you need to be doing is sticking your nose into this. If you mess around and she ends up changing her mind, you and I are going to have words. How many sons do you want to have angry at you?” His words were sharp, but he meant them. He’d seen what she did to his brother’s life, and he didn’t want the same thing for himself and Andrea.

“Case! I never!” Rhonda exclaimed. “Here I am, trying to watch out for you, to do what’s best for you, and you’re threatening me. Fine! You want to marry a horrible murdering witch who’s going to end up on that show Snapped, go right ahead. But I’m going on record right now as saying this is a bad idea.”

“I’ve heard your concern, Mother, and I’m still going to marry her. You can say you told me so if she murders me. I’m not worried about it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, my head hurts, and I’m going back to sleep.”

“Your head hurts? Did she poison you?”

“No, I got hit by a car, remember?” Before she could say anything else, Case hung up. Even more exhausted than he had been before, he put his phone down and closed his eyes. He shouldn’t have answered…
