Chapter 203 Kiss Hello
Seeing Case lying there hooked up to all of the monitors and machines made Andrea want to cry, but his eyes were open, and he was alert. She came in and took his hand, so glad he was all right. “How do you feel?” she asked.
“A little numb,” Case answered with a shrug. “I think they’ve got me on some pretty powerful medicine. But they said there’s not much wrong with me.”
“You have a concussion,” she reminded him. The nurse came over and scooted a chair behind Andrea. She turned and thanked her and then sat down, still holding his hand.
“It could’ve been a lot worse.” He gave her that smile he always flashed at her when he was trying to reassure her but wasn’t feeling too confident himself. “What time is it?”
She looked around the room for a clock. Not seeing one, she pulled her phone out of the back pocket of her jeans. “It’s… almost eleven,” she said. Had she really been here that long? Almost two hours? It seemed like she had been sitting out there forever, but she sort of thought it was just a figment of her imagination.
“Wow—that’s later than I thought,” Case muttered. “Do you know who the other driver is that they brought in?”
Again, she had to stop and consider the question before she just answered. She’d been so focused on him, she hadn’t thought about anyone else. But she did know. “Yeah, it was Bill,” she said. “Bill Frisk.”
A shadow passed over Case’s eyes, and he slowly shook his head. “The doc said he had a broken clavicle, and he’s in surgery.”
“I honestly haven’t been paying too much attention to what’s been going on with him,” she admitted. “But your car landed on top of his.”
“I remember.” Case still looked slightly lost, and she imagined he was thinking about what it was like to go flying through the air. “Man, I hope he pulls through.”
“Me, too.” She said a little prayer for Bill and felt guilty she hadn’t spent much time considering what he’d been through. “Brad, Charlie, and Leslie are still here but everyone else was sent home. They stayed as long as they could, but they didn’t like the crowd out there.”
His eyebrows raised as if he was surprised that they had come at all. “That’s nice of them.”
She nodded, not sure whether or not she should say anything about how hard it had been on Charlie, or just leave it for now. She supposed she’d have to leave in a few minutes so the others could come in and say hi. Then, he’d probably see for himself. “Did they say anything about how long you’d have to stay?”
“No, but I hope it’s not long. I’d like to go home.”
“I know. Me, too, but we’ll stay as long as they need you to,” she reminded him. “Gotta make sure you’re okay.”
“I’m fine, Andrea. I’m so sorry for scaring you that badly.”
“No, it’s not your fault. It’s racing, and I’ve known all along something like this could happen. That’s one of the reasons why I tried to keep my space at first, if I’m honest. I remember how awful it was watching Earnhardt at Daytona. When my grandpa heard that he’d passed away, he cried. I haven’t seen my grandpa cry many times, but that was one of them.”
Case looked away, and Andrea felt bad for bringing it up. “I can’t imagine not racing….”
“I’m not asking you to quit, Case,” she said, squeezing his hand. “I would never do that.”
“Maybe… it’s time to think about it, though.”
“I’ll support you no matter what you decide. Racing is dangerous, sure. But I almost died making movies. Twice. So….”
A small grin pulled up one corner of his mouth. “True. We just can’t win for losin’.”
She laughed. That sounded like something Grandpa Jack would say. “I love you, Case.”
“I love you, too. So much.”
