Chapter 158 Something's Got to Give
After practice, Case planned to take his mother and Andrea out for dinner, but it was evident the moment he saw Andrea’s face something had gone wrong. “What happened?” he asked, driving the golf cart back to the motor coach. He’d read a text from his mom that said she’d headed back to the hotel.
Andrea’s sigh told him that he wasn’t going to be happy about the answer. “Leslie and your mom got into it.”
“What? Really?” He wasn’t expecting that answer. He figured Andrea had been the one to argue with his mom if anyone had. “Why?”
“Leslie was trying to stand up for me. Every time your mom said how Sarah did something this way or that way, Leslie called her on it until your mom got mad, and they started arguing. It was ugly. But then, your mom left, and we could at least sit in silence and watch practice.”
“Where did she go?” he asked, running a hand through his hair. It was still hard to believe it had been Leslie who got into a fight with his mom, but he did appreciate the fact that she wanted to stand up for her sister.
“I’m not sure. I think they found her another box to watch from.”
He was silent for a few moments, not sure what to say. Eventually, he said the only thing that came to mind. “I’m really sorry, Andrea. You shouldn’t have to put up with that.”
“It’s not your fault.”
“No, but it is my job to make sure she understands that it’s not okay for her to talk to you the way that she does. If she can’t get herself together, she’s just going to have to stay out of my life for a while. I mean, I don’t want to have to pick between the two of you, but since she’s the one who keeps stirring up trouble, she’s the one who will have to go.”
“I don’t want you to have to do that, Case.” Andrea put her hand on his, and he could feel in her touch that she meant it.
“I know. I don’t want to have to either. But… I don’t know what else to do.”
“Sarah said she wasn’t very nice to her either until after she told her she was pregnant. Leslie mentioned to your mom that if we ever had kids, she’d have to be nicer to me or she might not see them. I’d never try to keep her away from them, but she does seem to want grandkids awfully badly.”
“Are you trying to say you think we should have a baby?” Case was half-joking, but at the same time, part of him was afraid that’s what Andrea was getting at.
She laughed. “No. Not anytime soon, anyway. I was just thinking, that might be one way to get her to let up, though. If she thinks there’s a chance we will get married and have kids someday, then maybe she’ll start to realize you’re serious about me. That is—you are serious about me, aren’t you?”
The teasing tone to her voice had him shrugging, playing along. “I mean… I guess. You’re okay. You smell all right, and you’re pretty.”
Andrea laughed. “Gee—thanks!”
Case laughed and pulled into the parking space next to the RV. “I am very serious about you, Andrea.” He turned the vehicle off and twisted to look at her. “I’ll talk to her. I’ll make sure she knows you’re not going away—not soon. Hopefully, not ever.”
Her face was flush at his compliment. “Thanks, babe. I love you.”
“I love you, too. And I’m gonna drag you into my RV now and show you how much.”
“Oh, no meetings?”
“Not at the moment.” Case checked the time on his phone. “I got time.” He leaned in and found her lips, putting his phone in his pocket, and the sound of her giggling let him know she was up for it, too. He’d call his mom later, chew her out, tell her to apologize, and maybe even get them together for dinner, but for now, the bedroom was calling his name, and he wasn’t going there without his woman.
Case let her lips go just long enough to come around the golf cart. He swept her off of her feet and carried her inside, Andrea still laughing. Talking to his mom wouldn’t be fun, but if it kept this woman happy, it was worth it.
