Chapter 55 Sarah Tells All

Case sat back down at the table, not sure how to start the conversation with Sarah. Anger flared up within him, but he had to push it down. Not only did he not want to cause a scene, he also wanted to see just how far she was willing to carry the lie.

“Good, you’re back.” Sarah smiled at him and reached across the table, as if she expected his hands. “Who was that?”

“My crew chief. So… how have you been feeling?”

“Ugh, like I told you, this morning sickness is just awful.”

“I can imagine. Is it as bad as it was the first time?”

Sarah made a face. “You know I don’t like to talk about the first time.”

“I’m sorry. It’s just… can you remind me again, how did you find out you were pregnant last time? You missed your period?”

“Yeah? So?”

“Well, you were only five weeks pregnant when you told me the first time. What took you so long to tell me this time?”

Sarah shrugged. “I thought you’d be mad.”

The waiter came over and took their order since he hadn’t gotten a chance the last time he’d tried because of Case’s ringing phone. He ordered a sandwich again, thinking that would be easy to take with him if he ended up making Sarah so mad she started yelling at him, and he didn’t feel comfortable sitting in the restaurant. She ordered chicken strips and fries. When the waiter left, she said, “The baby loves chicken strips,” and rubbed her belly.

Case wanted to shake her. “At least you’re far enough along this time, we shouldn’t have to worry about what happened last time. What happened last time, exactly? Did the doctor say?”

“He didn’t know. It was just an emergency room doctor. He just said I lost it, that’s all. That’s why there was so much blood.”

Case nodded, an odd idea coming to mind. She said she didn’t want to talk about the first baby, but she didn’t seem upset. Likewise, when he thought back about that night, he’d always thought it was strange that Sarah wasn’t upset when he’d first walked into the bathroom and saw all the blood. She seemed fine until he freaked out. Was it possible…. “Sarah, are you sure you were pregnant the first time?”

“What? Case, why would you ask that?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m just wondering. I mean, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, now that we’re having this baby, if that had been the case. You can tell me if that was all just a ruse.” He reached across the table and took her hand. He didn’t even want to touch her, but he did it anyway.

“Case, I can’t believe you think I’d sink so low as to make up a pregnancy just to get you to go out with me.”

“I’m not saying that. I was just thinking… maybe you only thought you were pregnant, and then, you started your period but didn’t know how to tell me. That might be why I couldn’t ever find you at the hospital.”

Sarah cocked her head to the side for a moment and looked at him for a few moments. “Okay, if I’m honest, yeah, that’s what happened. I think. I’m not sure. I never actually went to the hospital.”

Taking in some deep breaths to stay calm, Case found a smile. “What’s that?” He wanted to scream at her and run out of the restaurant. How dare she fool him into thinking he’d lost a child when she was never even pregnant!

“Okay… so my period did start late right after we, you know, hooked up. So I thought maybe I was. But then, I did get it. By then, I’d already thought we would make such a good couple. Wouldn’t it be nice if we did have a kid? So… when you came in and found me on my period….”

“I see. You lied to me and told me you were having a miscarriage.”

She shrugged. “I’m sorry. Don’t be mad, okay? I just… I wanted to be with you. And I knew, if I had a miscarriage, you wouldn’t break up with me.”

The waiter brought their food and Case used that as an excuse to let go of her hand. He ate half of his sandwich and watched her eat her chicken strips, muttering about how much the baby liked them, his anger brewing.

When he couldn’t take it anymore, he asked, “So what’s it going to be this time?”

“What’s that?” Sarah asked, leaning in as if that might help her to understand.

“How long are you going to wait until you have a miscarriage this time? I mean, it’s got to be soon. A lot of women start showing between their fourth and fifth month. I guess, if you eat enough you might be able to fool people for a while. But you don’t want to risk your figure, I’m sure.”

Sarah’s eyes were narrowed. “What are you accusing me of, Case? I am pregnant this time. Do you think I’d actually let you take me to a clinic if I wasn’t?”

“Oh, but those tests won’t be back for four to six weeks. So… you’ll have plenty of time to sink your hooks into me and then lose the baby. After that, how could I possibly abandon you? Are you going to tell everyone I broke up with you after a miscarriage again when that’s not what happened the first time either? People are saying awful things about me because I broke up with you, even though you were never pregnant.”

“I can’t help that, Case. You shouldn’t have broken up with me after I lost the baby!”

“It was two months of hell, Sarah. You and I are incompatible. And you weren’t pregnant.”

“But you didn’t know that.”

He shook his head. The charade was over “That was Dr. Kline on the phone, Sarah. They haven’t sent off the labs for the paternity tests yet, but they did do a pregnancy test.”

Her face went pale. “So…?”

“So—admit it, Sarah. You’re not pregnant. You’ve never been pregnant. You’re just lying to me to try to keep me attached to you.”

“How dare you!” Sarah shouted, pushing her food aside. Everyone was staring now. “I demand you take me back to the set. Now!”

While he was surprised she wanted a ride from him, Case wasn’t going to argue. “Gladly.” He pulled out enough cash to cover the food and a tip, grabbed the rest of his sandwich because he was still hungry, and carried it out with him.
