Chapter 45 Game On

The set for Captured by the Rogue was impressive. Even though they wouldn’t start shooting for a few more days, Andrea loved wandering around looking at the construction. Most of the movie would be filmed on a sound stage where the pirate ship, Lady of Paradise, was being built.

She liked to arrive early to get a feel for the atmosphere on set for the day. They’d be having a reading in a conference room, so it wasn’t as if she would be on set in costume today, but still, each movie had its own vibe, and she liked to tap into it early and often.

Sipping her coffee, she took in the beauty of the ship coming to life before her. It was amazing to her to see the team work together to bring such a monstrosity to life inside of a building. The producers had hired the best of the best for set design and costumes. There was no doubt this movie was going to be a huge success.

And she was starring in it.

“Andrea!”

She turned to see the director, Cam Stephens, coming toward her, his hand extended. “How are you?” she asked, tucking her script beneath her arm as she took his hand.

“I’m wonderful. So great to see you. You’re early.”

“I like to be early,” she shrugged. “The set is really coming along.”

“Oh, yeah. These guys are the best.” He gazed up at the ship, his hands on his hips, a proud father. “It looks real, doesn’t it?”

“Yeah, like it will be ready to sail the seven seas any day now.”

He chuckled and ran a hand through his curly, graying hair. “Say listen, I wanted you to know, I didn’t have anything to do with our most recent hire.”

She was confused at first. As far as she knew, they’d just hired the leading man, Travis Copper, but then she realized he meant Sarah. “Right,” she said nodding. “I understand.”

“She’ll only be on set a week or two. I’ve reworked the schedule so that all of your scenes together can be filmed in a few days, and then we’ll just get her part done and get her on her way.”

Andrea nodded. “I saw the revisions. It’ll be fine.”

“I hope so. I know this movie can be a huge success. But I hate drama, you know? Save that for when the cameras are rolling.”

Andrea could tell by his tone that was a warning to her that she’d better not start anything, and she understood. She’d worked with Cam a few times and knew him to be fair and friendly most of the time, but when he was p*ssed, the world knew it. “Got it. I’m sure it will be fine. Sarah and I are both professionals.”

He didn’t look completely convinced, and honestly, Andrea wasn’t either. As many times as she’d said that lately, Sarah certainly didn’t always act like a professional. “I’d just as soon your new boyfriend didn’t come on set while she’s here if that can be avoided. You understand?”

“Sure.” She smiled again, thinking that was unfair, but she wouldn’t push it. She didn’t expect Case to be on set much anyway, and he’d be leaving for North Carolina soon enough, maybe even before Sarah’s scenes started.

“All right then. We’ll be meeting in that room right over there in fifteen minutes. See you then.”

She waved goodbye at him and checked the time. From the sounds of it, Sarah wouldn’t be there for the read through, which was great, because she had been alarmed that she’d have to share the room with her today. Chances were, on such short notice, they’d just let an assistant or someone read Sarah’s lines, though she was pretty sure Travis would make it in.

Andrea spent a few more minutes looking around and was just heading over to the conference room when she heard a familiar, ear splitting voice behind her.

Turning around, she saw Sarah making her way to the conference room, her phone to her ear. She was wearing a sparkling, fitted dress that came to her knee, staggeringly high heels, and a puffy faux fur pink jacket. She looked like the fashion pages of Vogue had thrown up all over her. Not to mention she had her sunglasses on in a dark building.

Her stomach twisted into a knot as Andrea headed into the room, pretending everything was fine. Cam could’ve warned her that Sarah would be here today! She greeted the other actors who were already there, including the very famous Lance Arteaga and Howard Brown. Sarah walked in, still chattering on the phone. She nodded at the men and a few of the others and took a seat, snapping her fingers at her assistant who had followed her. The woman ducked out of the room with her head down, likely fetching her mistress a coffee.

“Hey, Andrea, how are you?” Bill Barnes said at her shoulder. He had originally been cast to play the male lead, but a scheduling conflict had caused him to switch to a lesser part. He was so handsome, Andrea might’ve been disappointed not to be sharing the spotlight with him if she didn’t have Case.

“I’m okay. How are you?” she asked.

“Good. You gonna be all right with this?” Bill gestured at Sarah, who was still talking noisily on her phone.

Andrea shrugged. “Sure. We are both mature professionals." She could be nice as long as Sarah was.

“I'm surprised you're not ready to take her down a few pegs,” Bill replied. “But it’s probably not worth it. She’s so far beneath you as a human being, really. I wouldn’t waste my time with all of her petty nonsense.”

She couldn’t help but smile. “Thanks, Bill. So far so good.” It was nice to know at least one person on set saw it for what it was, even if Sarah was ignoring her for the moment.

A few minutes later, Travis came in, and everyone greeted him, congratulating him on getting the lead, even Bill, who was responsible for the lead being available. Sarah hung up her phone and looked Travis up and down. He was definitely a hot guy, the sort of man Sarah would want to try and sink her claws into. Andrea almost felt sorry for him. No one deserved to be duped by Sarah Lockton.

He came over and sat next to Andrea, Sarah’s eyes following him and then landing on her face, a glare taking over what had been a look Andrea could only describe as hungry. “This seat taken?” Travis asked.

“Nope. Just saving it for the leading man.” She smiled widely, curling a loose strand of hair around her finger. As soon as he looked away, she focused on Sarah. If Sarah wanted to flirt with all of the guys and try to win them over, Andrea could play that game, too. As long as she ignored Sarah and didn't start a fight, she'd be following Cam' instructions. She wasn't about to let Sarah make this all about her. By the look on Sarah’s face, the challenge was on.This time, Andrea wasn’t going to lose.
