Chapter 90 LAPD Here to Help
Two officers from the LAPD had been interviewing Andrea for about an hour, and she was tired of talking. She felt as if she’d said the same thing over and over again. Whether they didn’t believe her or they were just checking she had her story straight, she couldn’t say, but she was ready for them to leave so she could go to sleep.
At least Case was there with her. He hadn’t let go of her hand since he’d come in. She insisted he leave, that he fly back to Daytona so he didn’t miss anything, but he wouldn’t budge. Now, while Officer Gonzalez went over things again, and Officer Buress took notes, she was thankful her hand was wrapped between his warm fingers.
“So you went under the water, and then what happened?” Officer Gonzalez, a tall man who looked like he couldn’t be any older than Andrea, asked for at least the third time.
“I came back up so that Lance could say his line about the sharks, then I went back under. I started swimming under the boat, like I had the first three times.”
“And then what happened?”
“I told you. I wasn’t able to go anywhere, and then I realized that Sven had his arms around me. He wasn’t trying to free me. He was preventing me from moving by pulling me back and holding me still. I struggled against him, but he’s a lot stronger than me.”
“Is that how he got the marks on his face?”
“Yes, I scratched at him, punched him, did everything I could to try to free myself, but he was way stronger than me. The only way I could finally break free of him at all was when I pulled the respirator out of his mouth so that he couldn’t breathe either.”
“And you’re certain that the reason he had ahold of you wasn’t because he was trying to free your skirt that was caught on the boat, as he told the others on set?”
“Yes, I’m sure that I was not caught on anything. Can they drain the vat to show you there’s nothing that could catch my dress?”
The two officers exchanged glances. “We will do that if necessary, Ms. Sparks. We need to see what footage, if any is available, speak to the other witnesses, and see if we can find this Sven person and discuss it with him as well. Do you have any idea why he would want to hurt you?”
“No, but I don’t know who he is.”
“You’ve never worked with him before?” Officer Buress asked, tapping her pencil on her notepad.
“No. Normally, the divers I work with are George or Stan. Cam, the director, said that he was expecting George today, but Sven showed up instead. Maybe George knows him. Maybe not. I have no idea. It’s really odd for the company not to send one of the two divers they always send to the set.”
Again, the officers exchanged glances, and Officer Buress wrote some more notes. “Did you say anything to him before you started the scene?”
“No, only hello, or good morning, or something like that.” It was hard for Andrea to remember what happened before she almost drowned.
“So it isn’t as if he was angry at you before the scene. Why would he try to kill you?” Officer Gonzalez asked.
She had no answer for that. All she could say was, “It’s possible someone put him up to it.”
“Who would want to hurt you?” Officer Buress asked, her pretty face puckered up as if it was impossible to think that anyone could ever want to hurt anyone.
“Sarah Lockton,” Andrea said without hesitation. “It’s possible she put him up to it.”
Again, the officers looked at each other. “We understand that you and Ms. Lockton have a rivalry that dates back at least a year, Ms. Sparks, but you’re making a serious allegation.” Officer Gonzalez looked leery of having Officer Buress write that down.
“I realize that, Officer, but it wouldn’t be the first time she’s done something to seriously injure me.”
“What’s that?” both officers asked at the same time, and Case squeezed her hand.
“What are you talking about?” Case asked.
Sarah took a deep breath. She couldn’t avoid telling him what happened anymore. Nondisclosure agreement or not, it was time to tell her story.
