Chapter 202 Awake
The high-pitched chirps and beeps mingled with voices he didn’t recognize, speaking in urgent tones has Case coming in and out of consciousness. He vaguely remembered going for the ride of his life, being upside down and right side up so many times he’d lost count. He also remembered being extracted from the car and what he thought might’ve been a helicopter ride. Keeping his mind focused wasn’t an option, so he went back to sleep.
When he finally regained the strength to keep his eyes open long enough to make out where he was, he realized he was in a hospital. Nothing hurt, but then, he couldn’t really feel much of anything either. He saw a woman in scrubs standing near his head on his left side. “Where’s Andrea?” he asked, not even recognizing his voice. It was more of a croak than a statement.
“Oh! Mr. Meyer, you’re awake,” she said with a smile. “We’re glad to have you back with us. How do you feel?”
“Tired,” he said as his eyes attempted to close again. “Is Andrea here? Is she okay?”
“Ms. Sparks is in the waiting room with several of your friends. She’s upset, but okay. Dr. Collins will let her in to see you as soon as he’s sure you’re up for a visitor. I’ll go get him.”
“Thank you,” Case said, watching her head out the door before giving in and letting his eyes close again.
What seemed like a split second later, he heard footsteps and opened his eyes to see a short man with a stethoscope around his neck. This had to be the doctor. “Mr. Meyer, nice to see your eyes open.” He picked up a chart from the end of the bed and glanced over it before he came over to the machines and checked a few of those as well. “Everything looks good. How do you feel?”
That was the second time he’d been asked that question, and Case wasn’t sure how to answer. “Fine. What’s wrong with me?”
“Remarkably, not as much as we feared,” the doctor said pulling a small flashlight from his pocket and shining it in Case’s eyes. “Follow my finger.” Case tried to do as he was asked but was having some difficulty doing so. The doctor made a small humming sound Case took to think things were as he’d expected. “You have a concussion, lots of bruising, and a sprained wrist. Other than that… everything seems to be okay. That’s remarkable, considering the wild ride you went on. I watched the video online. Holy smokes, that was some wreck.”
Case absorbed all of that information, wondering if he’d ever want to watch that video himself. It sounded like it would be difficult for him to sit and watch his car spinning over and over again, disintegrating as it bounced off of other vehicles.
Then he remembered landing on top of another car. “Was anyone else hurt?”
The doctor nodded. “They brought in another driver. He’s in surgery now. Broken clavicle.”
Case’s eyes widened. That was the collarbone. “Who was it?” He had no idea whose car he’d landed on when he came down, but he imagined that’s probably who they were talking about.
“I’m sorry to say I don’t follow racing that much, Mr. Meyer. I know who you are, and that’s about it. But I’ll ask.”
“Thank you,” Case said, praying it wasn’t Charlie or someone else he knew well. Whoever it was, it sounded like he was in worse shape than Case. “Can Andrea come in?”
“Yes, I spoke to her a little while ago. Now that we’re sure you’re awake and stable, I’ll let her come back to see you.”
“Thank you,” Case aid again. The doctor wrote a few things down on the clipboard from the end of the bed and checked a few more machines before he said, “Try to get some rest, and we’ll be back to check on you soon. If you need anything, you can call the nurse with that button next to your hand.”
Case looked down and saw the button on the bed. “Great. Thanks.”
Dr. Collins nodded and then left the room. Case took a deep breath and prepared for Andrea to come in. He hoped they’d been keeping her updated on everything that was going on, and she knew he was okay. Otherwise, he could only imagine the hell she’d been through in the last… however long it had been since they’d brought him in.
He heard Andrea’s voice in the hallway and could tell she’d been crying. When the nurse led her in, he wished he could leap out of the bed and go wrap her in his arms. She rushed over to his bedside and took his hand, touching him so gently it was as if she thought she might break up. “Thank God you’re okay,” she said.
Case smiled and squeezed her hand. “Thank God, indeed.”
