Chapter 140 Make Me Beautiful
Listening to Stephon’s stories made the time pass more quickly as Andrea sat in her bathroom getting her makeup done. She had also been listening to the race while it was on, but now that it was over, and she’d found out Case had done well but not won, she was focused on calming her nerves. The idea that she was about to go an award show where she was up for a major award was making her anxious.
“Do you have your acceptance speech ready?” Stephon asked her when he was just about done with her face.
“I do,” Andrea admitted. “I feel a little silly even taking one, though.”
“Why? Girl, you’ve got just as much of a chance to win as anyone else.”
Knowing that Sarah was in the adjoining bedroom, lying on Andrea’s bed with some sort of face mask on that Stephon hoped would remove her garish makeup made Andrea glance in that direction. Sarah was up for the same award, and she didn’t want to hurt her feelings. “I guess,” she said with a shrug.
“Of course you do. I sure hope my name is in there, ‘cause you look fabulous, and I deserve a shout out. Now, look in that mirror and tell me you’re not a vision. Go ahead—tell me!”
With a giggle, Andrea turned to the bathroom mirror above the double sink. Her makeup looked amazing, better than it ever had before in her entire life. “Wow! Stephon, you certainly outdid yourself.”
“I did, didn’t I?” He beamed from behind her shoulder. “Now, go get your dress on, and send me that sister of yours.”
She wanted to hug him but didn’t want to mess her face up. “Thank you—and should I win, no worries, you’re already in my acceptance speech.”
“Get out of town! For real?” He blushed and tears sprang to his eyes.
“Of course. I plan on thanking all of my favorite people.”
“Ah, Andrea! That’s exactly why you’re my favorite! Thank you, girl. Whether you win or not, that means so much to me. Now, get out of here before you make my eyeliner run. Don’t worry about yours, though. It’s waterproof.”
With a smile, Andrea headed to her bedroom, hoping Kelsey was there to help her get her dress on, but she paused in the doorway. Sara wasn’t where she expected her to be. Instead, she was standing in front of Andrea’s closet door, where her dress was hanging. “What are you doing?” she asked, panic rising up in her throat. She’d left Sarah alone with her dress! What had she been thinking?”
Sarah turned around quickly, the makeup mask making her look like a monster. “Nothing! I was just looking at how the light picks up those hints of fire. It’s a beautiful dress.”
Raising an eyebrow, Andrea walked slowly toward her, wondering if she had something in her hands—like itching powder, or pins. “Thank you. It’s a stark contrast to your white gown, but then, I thought the fire would look nice with my hair.”
“Definitely.” Sarah smiled as pleasantly as possible considering what was on her face. “Is Stephon ready for me?”
“He is. You can go on.”
“Great—thank you.” Sarah turned and headed into the bathroom, and Andrea heard Stephon sigh as he said something about so much work to do.
Kelsey came back into the room. “Where have you been? Sarah was alone with my dress!”
“Only for a second. I stepped out to make sure your driver was on the way, and to let the stylist in. She’ll be here in a second. Did Sarah touch your dress?”
“I don’t know. I came in and found her standing next to it.”
Kelsey gave her an uneasy look. “Let me look it over quickly before you put it on.”
Andrea nodded, and Kelsey took the dress down, checking it over carefully. “I don’t see anything.”
“God, if she ruins this night for me….”
“I’d say surely she won’t after how nice you’ve been to her lately, but who knows?”
Andrea looked at Sarah’s gown, which was hanging across the room. She could easily ruin it right now. Either spill something on it or rip the seams. But she wasn’t like her half-sister. She wouldn’t stoop so low. Instead, she took a deep breath and let the stylist who’d just walk in help her into the gown, praying this new leaf Sarah had turned over had prevented her from tampering with the gown, but Andrea knew she’d spend the whole night worrying.
