Chapter 113 Help a Sister Out
After a meeting with his team, Case hurried to the front offices where all of the business for Daytona Speedway was conducted. He had a meeting with a woman he didn’t want to be late for. It seemed like all he did was sit through meetings these days, but this one was important.
He walked into the office and up to an older woman sitting behind a secretary’s desk. “Mr. Meyer. You’re just in time. Ms. Blye will see you now. Go on in.”
“Thank you,” he said and hurried through the office door.
LuAnne Blye was a middle-aged woman with dark hair and the sort of nose that probably got her teased in elementary school because of the pronounced hook in the middle of it. But she had a bright smile and shook his hand. “Mr. Meyer, have a seat. It’s so nice to speak with you. Congratulations on the pole.”
“It’s nice to meet you. Thank you.” He took a seat and rested his hands on his knees, not sure how to begin what he’d wanted to talk to her about.
Luckily, she seemed to be a pro at this. “You said you had an up and coming musician you wanted to tell me about?” she asked with her smile still in place.
“I do. Her name is Leslie Testa. To be perfectly honest with you, Ms. Blye, she’s my girlfriend’s sister. But that’s not why I’m here. I think she’s very talented, and I was hoping you’d consider letting her sing the national anthem. I know you’ve already got someone for Sunday’s race, but in the future….”
“Actually….” LuAnne held a finger up to stop him. “The musician who was supposed to sing this weekend, Marty McCole, called a little while ago to tell me that he’s come down with a severe case of laryngitis, and he doesn’t think he’ll be able to sing this weekend.”
Case was stunned. He wasn’t expecting to actually be able to get Leslie the gig for this weekend, but he knew she’d drop everything for this. “This sounds like fate to me, Ms. Blye.”
“Please, call me LuAnne,” she said, her cheeks pinking. “I agree. Do you happen to have any footage of her singing the national anthem?”
“It just so happens….” Case pulled out his phone and went to Leslie’s YouTube channel. He knew there was a recording of her singing it there that was spectacular, and he was able to find it quickly.
He handed his phone over to LuAnne, and soon her disposition changed as she watched and listened to Leslie giving a heartfelt performance of their nation’s most treasured song. Tears began to stream down her face, and she had to reach for a tissue. When Leslie finished, LuAnne said, “That was just beautiful!”
“I agree. She’s got some real talent, doesn’t she?”
“Please, give me her contact information. I have to call her at once, Mr. Meyer.”
With a big smile on his face, Case said, “Please, call me Case.” He quickly gave LuAnne Leslie’s phone number, thanked her for her time, and left the office, tucking his phone back into his pocket as he went.
Outside, he rushed to his golf cart, hurrying to another appointment, but he was so glad that Leslie would have the opportunity to sing in front of so many people. It could mean instant success for her, and she was so talented, she really did deserve it.
He decided not to tell Andrea, though. The idea of surprising her with it when he could see her face seemed like a better idea than telling her over the phone. Unless, of course, Leslie called her sister and told her. There’d be nothing he could do about that.
After his next appointment was over, Case was on his way back to his RV for a little break when his phone rang. “Hello?”
“Case! Oh, my gosh! Did you do this?”
Leslie was so excited, her joyous laughter vibrated in his ear. “I may have had something to do with it.”
“You’re the best! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this. Seriously, I love you—I mean, not like my sister does, but just as much. In a different way. You’re amazing!”
“I’m so glad I could help.” A broad smile lit his face listening to her squeals of excitement. “Let’s not tell Andrea, though, okay? I’d love for it to be a surprise.”
“Works for me. So long as Mom doesn’t tell her. She’s a blabber mouth.”
Somehow, Case thought she could keep a secret if she wanted to. She’d known Sarah was Andrea’s half-sister, after all. “Let’s just try our best. Ms. Blye was very impressed with your abilities, Leslie, and so am I. Congratulations. You deserve this.”
“Thank you, Case. Congrats on the pole. I’ve been meaning to tell you. I’ve just been so busy with school and gigging and everything. But I’ll be there for the race on Sunday for certain.”
“I look forward to seeing you, and I’m sure your sister will be glad to see you, too.” He said goodbye and hung up. He knew Andrea and Leslie fought like sisters sometimes, but they also loved each other as sisters should. He just hoped their other sister would behave herself why Leslie was here so that nothing ruined her performance.
