Chapter 39 Secrets and Rumors

“Tell me everything!” Kelsey demanded dropping onto the couch next to Andrea. She’d been back in her LA apartment a few hours, but this was the first chance they’d had to catch up since Case had just left a few minutes ago to check out his new digs. “Seriously, how is it going? That kiss sure looked steamy!”

Kelsey was more than just a personal assistant. She was also a friend. Most of the time, Andrea felt lost without her, though she had been managing these past few weeks. Of course, she’d had Case and her family. Still, seeing the brunette adjust her glasses and lean in, like she couldn’t wait to hear every juicy detail reminded Andrea of how much she loved this girl.

“That kiss was… amazing,” Andrea agreed, sure her eyes were glazed over as she thought about that night. “He’s a fabulous kisser.”

“Yeah, it looks like it. And how’s everything else?” Kelsey raised and lowered her eyebrows rapidly a few times.

“Kels! Please! There hasn’t been anything else. We were staying at my parents’ house and then his mom’s.”

“So? A guy that hot… a broom closet would do.”

Andrea felt her face turn red, but she giggled at her friend’s unabashed honesty. “Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but we’re taking it slow. I’m not sure….” She stopped, not certain how or if she should be completely honest. Kelsey was certainly trustworthy, but stating her fears aloud might sound silly even to Andrea herself.

“You’re not sure about him because of Sarah? F*ck Sarah. She doesn’t dictate who you see and who you don’t.”

“No, I know that.” Andrea grinned at Kelsey’s gumption. She laid it all out on the table. “It’s just… I know he’s been talking to her some. She won’t stop calling him.”

Scoffing, Kelsey asked, “About what? Didn’t he tell her to go to hell, like three months ago?”

“Yes, but apparently she got lost on the way. She definitely wants him back.” Even the thought of Case getting back together with that hussy made Andrea’s stomach twist into a knot.

Kelsey took another sip of her coffee and then set the mug down on a coaster on the coffee table. “Too bad for her. Don’t worry, Andrea. I know nobody knows why they broke up, but I’m sure that he’s over her. It made no sense that they’d be together in the first place.”

“Yeah, I agree. I just don’t know why he ever dated her. She’s horrible, and he’s such a great guy.” Kelsey’s eyes shifted slightly, and Andrea realized she’d heard something. Being a personal assistant, Kelsey had connections with other PAs. Sometimes she knew things even the stars didn’t know. “Kels?”

“Ands?”

Andrea rolled her eyes at the silly abbreviation of her name. “What did you hear?”

“Nothing.”

“Bullsh*t. You heard something.”

“Well, I’m not sure how accurate it is. I heard it like, fourth hand. So….”

“So when has that ever stopped you before.”

Kelsey snorted. “True. It’s just… I know how much you like him, and I don’t want you to think anything less of him because of what I have to say.”

The twisting in her stomach turned into a stabbing pain for a second as Andrea contemplated what that might mean. Did Kelsey know something that would change Andrea’s image of Case for the worse? Whatever it was, she needed to hear it. She could always ask him if it was true, couldn’t she? “What did you hear?”

Blowing out a hot breath, Kelsey leaned in, as if there were others who might hear in the empty apartment. “Well, I have a friend who is friends with a person who knows Sarah’s PA, Gidget.”

Andrea made a face at the mention of the woman. Gidget wasn’t evil like Sarah, but she was as annoying as her name sounded. “Okay….”

“She said that Case and Sarah met at a club in Miami. He was there for a race, and she was at a bachelorette party for a friend. Apparently, he’d lost the race that night and it cost him the championship, or something. Don’t ask me. I don’t follow NASCAR racing. So… he was totally drunk off his a*s. I guess she was plastered, too. Anyway, they woke up together….”

All of the color was draining from Andrea’s face. She could feel it sliding down her neck. It was true that Case had lost the race at Homestead this past season and it had cost him the championship by a few points—to Stewart Antony, a younger driver who’d only been on the circuit a couple of years. He was said to be the next Dale Earnhardt.

It made sense that Case would only get together with Sarah while he was drunk. Otherwise, he would’ve known better than to date someone so vile, right? But… why did what could’ve been a one-night stand turn into a relationship that lasted a few months?

“Andrea, are you okay?” Kelsey asked.

“I’m fine,” Andrea said, but she wasn’t. It was hard to picture Case in bed with anyone, especially Sarah. Of course, she’d assumed they’d slept together as a couple. But images of the two of them drunk and tangled up in sheets made her nauseated. How had he felt waking up next to her and realizing what had happened? And what in the world had kept him coming back for more?

Andrea had no idea, but she wanted to find out. The easy thing to do would be to ask Case, but there was no guarantee he’d answer. Besides, he might get mad if he knew she was listening to rumors about him. She needed to know what the secret was, the reason they’d broken up. Then, maybe she could sort out how they’d ended up together in the first place. But that seemed to be the one thing Case refused to tell her. Andrea would just have to find another way to get her answers.
