Chapter 117 Out of Control

Thursday, Andrea was doing her best to stay apprised of what was going on in Daytona while still shooting her movie. She had a tricky scene to do today, one that required help from a stuntwoman. It was amazing to her how much the other gal, a professional who’d been in lots of movies, looked like her when she was wearing a red wig and the same outfit. But then, after seeing Andre at the club the other night, Andrea was getting used to seeing herself when she wasn’t looking in the mirror.

Cam was going over the scene with the stuntwoman, Tiff, who was in her mid-thirties and had biceps like cannons. She’d done some gymnastics earlier when the cast members begged, and it was amazing to see her effortlessly flip herself through the air, frontward, backward, turning, and always landing on her feet. Andrea had no doubt this scene would go well, even though it sounded so dangerous.

“So… you’ll start out on the crow’s nest. Then, you’ll slide down to that point there, where you can see the wood’s been notched. That’s when the explosion will take place. You’ll flip off of there, land on this part of the ship’s mast,” Cam said, pointing, “and then there will be another explosion which will cause you to change direction, do another flip, and land here.” He showed her the point on the boat where he expected her to land. “There’ll be a pad for you. Any questions?”

“No, I think I’ve got it,” Tiff said, looking over the path she’d follow when she did her fall.

“All right, then, let’s get to it!” Cam clapped his hands, and the crew got into position.

Andrea wanted to watch, but she also knew that Case’s race was going on. She had her phone in her hand, set to silent, and constantly looked from Case to the set.

The first take went well, but Cam wanted to do it again. “Andrea, let’s get you up here to do your part, and then we’ll cut away to Tiff.”

Reluctantly, Andrea set her phone down and headed up to the fake pirate ship. Her part seemed dangerous, but she knew it wasn’t really. She’d be strapped to a safety harness the entire time she was up in the crow’s nest. Still, if Sarah was on set, she’d be worried. Luckily, her half-sister hadn’t been around all week, so there was little chance that either Andrea or Tiff would get her, unless Sarah really did have a friend on set who was helping her, and Andrea doubted that. The police had been thorough in their investigation.

Andrea got her harness on and double checked it was secure. Then, the stagehands hoisted her up to the crow’s nest. Her feet weren’t really even touching the floor, but something didn’t quite seem right. Andrea tested her weight on the wooden floor the best she could with the harness on. “Cam, this doesn’t seem that stable!” she called down.

“You’re fine, Andrea!” Cam called back up to her.

“No, I know that, but….”

“We’re burning time, Andrea. We gotta get rolling.”

Still feeling unsettled, Andrea said, “Okay. Just… check it before Tiff comes back up, okay.”

“Yep, yep. Let’s go!” Cam hollered. He made sure everyone was in position and then yelled, “Action!”

“If you want to defeat me and my friends, you’ll have to kill me!” Andrea said, pointing a sword in the direction where Lance would’ve been standing if this wasn’t all staged.

“Good!” Cam shouted. “Let’s reset the cameras and go one more time. Andrea, hangout up there for a minute!”

“Literally!” she yelled back, making everyone laugh.

A few minutes later, he was ready and gave the word for Andrea to say her line again, which she did. After Cam checked it over, he nodded. “Great. Bring her down!”

Andrea was relieved to have her feet back on the ground. As the stage hands were unhooking her, Tiff was standing nearby. “Be careful up there,” Andrea warned. “That crow’s nest didn’t seem very steady to me.”

The stuntwoman chuckled. “I’ll be fine, sugar. I’m a pro at this.”

“Right. But….”

Tiff waived her off, and Andrea stopped talking, wondering if she was just being paranoid.

When she got back to her seat, she was glad to see Case was still doing just fine in the race. He’d explained that he was planning on hanging out in the back to avoid all of the drama.

With everyone back in place, including Tiff on the crow’s nest, no harness on her, Cam gave the word for them to start, and Tiff began her acrobatics.

Before she could slide down the pole like she was supposed to, the bottom of the crow’s nest seemed to fall away from beneath her. At the same time, Whiskey hit another car on the racetrack, and cars began to spin out of control all across the superspeedway. Andrea didn’t know if she should watch the race or the disaster unfolding in front of her. She covered her mouth as a silent scream emerged from her throat. Tiff was tumbling toward the ground; cars were tumbling toward Case—everything was spiraling out of control!
