Chapter 153 Not In the Plans

Seeing Rhonda in Case’s car had made Andrea want to scream, shout, pull her own hair out, and run away from the airport. But after a long day of filming and having to beg Wilma to let them go (which had earned her the nickname Andrea-Drama-da) she didn’t have the energy to argue. Instead, she did her best to tune Ms. Meyer out.

As soon as he had two seconds to do so, Case pulled Andrea into the back of his motor coach. “I’m so sorry, baby. I had no idea she was coming. She called when I was on my way to pick you up.”

With a sigh, Andrea said, “It’s okay. I know it’s not your fault.”

“I will make sure she has a hotel room. She can’t stay here.”

That brought a smile to her lips. “Thanks.” Thoughts of the two of them sleeping on the couch or in the recliners while Rhonda sprawled out on the bed came to mind.

“What are you two doing in there?” Rhonda called from the living room. “I sure hope it’s nothing obscene. You know how I hate listening to that sort of thing.”

“We’ll be right out, Mom,” Case replied, rolling his eyes. He leaned down and kissed Andrea quickly, and then the two of them walked back out.

“Where are you staying tonight, Mom?” Case asked

Rhonda looked around. “What? You buy a two million dollar RV, but you don’t have space for your own mother?”

“Mom, it only has one bed. It might be a challenge to find a room with the race in town, but we’ll find you something.” Case sounded exasperated as he pulled out his phone and started scrolling. Andrea sat down on the opposite end of the couch where Rhonda was sitting and tried her best to smile pleasantly while Case concentrated on his phone, perched on the edge of one of the recliners.

“How is your movie going? Sarah calls me all the time to update me, but you never do,” Rhonda said.

“It’s going well,” Andrea replied, ignoring the nasty comment. As if Rhonda had ever seemed open to a phone call from her. “We are almost done.”

“I heard that the director got fired. Was it for sleeping with the cast members? You weren’t sleeping with him, were you? If Case finds out you were, it will break his heart.” She pretended to whisper, but it was obvious Case could hear her, too.

Andrea could feel her nostrils flaring. “It wasn’t for sleeping with the cast members, and no I’m not sleeping with him. Or anyone else.”

Pressing a hand to her heart, Rhonda said, “Oh, good. I’m so relieved to hear that. This whole time, I’ve been afraid Case was going to end up with some terrible venereal disease. To know that the two of you are not sleeping together makes my mother’s heart beat a little easier.”

Andrea’s mouth dropped open as she debated whether or not she should correct what Rhonda had misunderstood or yell at her for indicating that Andrea had some sort of disease. She didn’t get a chance to do either.

“Here we go,” Case said. “Found you a great room, Mom. You’ll love it.”

“It better be a suite,” she said. “I can’t stand cramped quarters.”

Andrea looked around the RV they were sitting in. How could this possibly be better?

“It’s a suit with a lovely view, and it’s not too far from the track. Why don’t I drive you over there now? We can put your luggage in the room, and then we can go out for dinner.”

“Great. I’d love to have some dinner with just my son.” She shot a dagger in Andrea’s direction out of the corner of her eye.

“I meant… we could all three….”

“You know what, that’s fine, Case. The two of you should definitely go out for dinner. Leslie should be here anyway. It’ll give us a chance to catch up.”

“But Andrea…” he protested. Seeing her expression, he stopped. She desperately wanted to spend time with him, but not if it meant listening to Rhonda. “All right. Come on, Mom. Let’s go.”

“Do we have to ride that dreadful golf cart again? I just hate that device.”

“Yes, Mom. It’s the only way to get to the car—unless you want to walk.” Case was already gathering her things. He’d left her big bags in the car, but she had brought all sorts of other stuff with her—a purse, a pillow, a magazine, and so many other things, Andrea couldn’t keep track of all of it.

“Well, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow,” Rhonda said, glancing over her shoulder at Andrea as she headed toward the door. “Unless you… decide to go back to California.”

“See you tomorrow, Ms. Meyer,” Andrea called. Case kissed Andrea quickly and then followed Rhonda out, likely just happy she was moving without him having to prod her.

Andrea sat back down, phone in hand, thankful Rhonda was gone, but so sad she hadn’t gotten to spend more time with Case. With any luck, Rhonda would eat fast and want to go back to the hotel early. Andrea really wanted to spend time with Case.

Leslie answered her call on the second ring. “Hey. Are you here?” her sister asked.

“I am. What are you guys up to?”

“Uh… nothing you wanna hear about,” Leslie said, and then she heard Charlie laughing in the background.

Andrea’s nose immediately wrinkled. “Why would you answer….”

“I’m kidding! Mostly. What are you and Case doing?”

Groaning, Andrea said, “His mom’s in town. He’s going out to eat with her.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, he didn’t know she was coming.”

“Do you wanna go out to eat with us?”

It was nice of Leslie to offer, but she realized her sister and Charlie needed to be alone, too. “No, it’s okay. I’ll just take a nap while Case’s out.”

“Are you sure? We don’t mind.”

“It’s okay. Thanks anyway. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Andrea hung up and rubbed her eyes with both hands. She was tired. She decided to go ahead and go to sleep for a while. With any luck, she’d sleep until Case got home, and then they could finally spend some time alone.
