Chapter 151 Catching Up
It was so late when Andrea finally got home from the set that night, she could hardly keep her eyes open. But she’d been so busy shooting all day, she’d hardly gotten a chance to text Case, let alone call him, and she knew she couldn’t go to sleep without speaking to him first.
When he answered, Case’s voice was groggy. “Sorry—did I wake you up?” she asked, her voice soft because she was almost as tired as he was.
“That’s okay. Are you just now getting home?”
“Yeah,” she admitted, sinking onto the couch. Kelsey brought her a drink, and she thanked her, pulling her shoes off with one hand as she held the phone with the other.
“Good grief. Wilma’s really demanding.”
“I know. But we are ahead of schedule now. I’m praying that means we’ll get out on time tomorrow. I really can’t wait to see you.”
“I can’t wait to see you either. How were things?”
“Ugh.” Andrea didn’t even know where to begin. “Having Leo on set has been exasperating. I feel like I’m constantly having to be aware of where he’s at and where Sarah is so that I can avoid each of them. He’s always so loud, and a lot of the time, he’s talking about me.”
“I’m so sorry, babe. You want me to come over and beat him up tomorrow?”
She giggled, knowing he was kidding but thinking maybe that wouldn’t have been such a bad idea if he had any time in his schedule. “No, thanks. At least tomorrow is supposed to be his last day on set.”
“Is Sarah behaving at least?”
“She seems to be. But I don’t trust her, not after I heard her talking about me at the party.”
“I can’t say as though I blame you there. Well, one more day this week, and then you should have the whole weekend off.”
“Yeah. I hope so. But there’s something else I need to tell you.”
“What’s that?”
She could hear the concern in his voice. “Officer Gonzalez stopped by today. He told me that Cam’s being charged with Jan’s murder, and they believe Cam was involved with my attempted drowning, too.”
The phone was quiet for a long moment while Case processed. “Cam?” he finally asked. His reaction was similar to what hers has been when she’d heard the news. “What? Why in the world?”
“I don’t know. It makes no sense to me.”
“And they still can’t see any connection between Sarah and either one of them? I mean… is it possible that Sarah pretended to have feelings for Cam so that she could get him to help and pull this over on him?”
“Do you think she’d do something like that?” Andrea had considered Sarah might be involved in the drowning with Jan, but she hadn’t thought about the actress trying to seduce Cam into helping her commit murder.
“I do think she’s capable of it, at least she was before she turned over her new leave. If she’s actually turned anything over at all.”
“Gosh, Case. I sure hope not. I just wish this entire nightmare was over.”
“I know. I’m so sorry, baby. Hey, you get to see your sister tomorrow—your other one. The one you sorta like.”
Andrea giggled at the way he phrased it. “I know. She called me today. I only had a few minutes to talk to her. She said she was planning on going to the race in the Poconos, too. She said there’s some sort of a fund raiser going on, and she gets to drive a racecar?”
“Yeah, I was going to ask you if you might be interested in taking part in that, but I didn’t know if you’d want to or not.”
“Are you serious? Of course I want to. I’d love to race that track.”
“I’m pretty sure the cars you will be racing aren’t quite as fast as ours.”
“Still, it sounds like a lot of fun to me.” The prospect of getting to race brought a smile to her face for the first time in hours.
“All right then, I’ll get you signed up.”
“Awesome. Thanks, babe. I love you.”
“I love you, too. You’d better get some sleep though. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Andrea said goodbye, hoping he was right, and she would see him tomorrow. If Wilma tried to keep them late, she might just have to become the diva she’d always avoided being.
