Chapter 186 Over My Dead Body

When Andrea’s mother had mentioned she was ready to start planning the wedding, she wasn’t kidding! It was all she could talk about. She’d even stopped by the store and picked up several wedding magazines after practice so they could flip through them that evening.

Andrea was slightly amused by her mother’s excitement. She and Case hadn’t even talked about when they might get married. It might not even be this year! But her mom was over the moon, and Andrea was glad she had something to be excited about.

They stayed at Case’s house that evening, and Karen insisted on cooking them a large meal. She made her famous stuffed chicken breast, which was delicious as always. Then, she insisted Andrea and Leslie sit with her and look at the magazines while Case, Tim, Grandpa Jack, and Charlie went down to the pond on Case’s property and fished. Andrea would’ve rather been out there with the men tossing the line in, but her mom was having so much fun.

“What do you think of this skirt?” her mom asked, pointing at a mermaid cut gown.

“Those are so restrictive,” Andrea noted. “I think I’ll have the woman who designed my dress for the awards ceremony come up with something.” She remembered Lanshia jokingly saying she wanted to design her wedding gown. Now, she could. She trusted her to do something that important since she’d done such a good job on the other gown.

“But you have to have an idea of what you’d want her to make,” Karen argued.

“True.” Realizing she would not get out of sitting there with her mom, talking about the wedding, Andrea did her best to smile and agree, giving her opinion from time to time. Karen was grinning from ear to ear. Leslie looked like she wanted to run out of the house screaming but also stuck to it.

These were memories she was making, Andrea realized that. She didn’t get to see her mother nearly enough. Now that Leslie was dating Charlie, she got to see her more than before, but it couldn’t be enough. She needed to be happy and focus on the positive. She was getting married to a wonderful man. If it meant planning with her mom, so be it.

As Karen continued to look through the magazines, Andrea’s phone rang. She pulled it out, looked at the number, and caught her breath. She wasn’t expecting a call from this person. “Hello?”

“Andrea? This is Rhonda.”

Getting up from the couch and excusing herself, Andrea walked into the other room. Rhonda had basically left them alone since she’d made her tear-filled apology over dinner. “Hello, Ms. Meyer.”

“It is my understanding that you and Case have gotten engaged.”

She’d assumed Case had told his mother, but the way she worded it, Andrea thought maybe not. “Yes, that’s right.”

“Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but the only way that’s going to happen is over my dead body. He may have forced me to apologize to you, but that doesn’t mean it’s all water under the bridge my dear. Far from it. If you think you’re going to marry him, you’d better get ready for a war. And I never lose.”

Andrea’s mouth hung open. Case’s mom was truly threatening her? Saying she’d keep them from marrying? Andrea didn’t know what to say. So she said nothing at all, and Rhonda hung up.

She continued to stand in the hall for a few moments, contemplating what she should do about the call. She’d need to tell Case, but she didn’t want to alarm him before the race. Would she be able to keep it from him until the race was over? Andrea’s mom called to her from the other room. “Andrea, is everything all right?”

Not wanting to ruin her mom’s evening, she took a deep breath and hid Rhonda’s rude comments behind a smile. “Yeah, it’s fine. Rhonda just wanted to say congratulations.”

“That’s so nice,” Karen said. “Come look at the flowers on this page! They’re so beautiful—purple and pink!”

Suddenly realizing how nice it was to have a supportive mother, Andrea hurried back to look at the magazine—and give her mom a hug.
