Chapter 88 Terrifying Call

Daytona was by far the busiest two weeks of the racing year. Not only was there a ton of work to get done just because the season hadn’t started yet. Not to mention, every sports magazine, channel, newspaper, and website wanted an interview of some sort with the more popular drivers, which included Case. There were practices and drivers’ meetings to attend, as well as meetings with his own team and owner. It was a lot, but Case was used to it.

He was in the middle of an interview with a group of reporters when his phone started buzzing in his pocket. He ignored it, but when it continued to go off, he excused himself and stepped away to make sure it wasn’t an emergency.

It was Sarah. He rolled his eyes. There was no way in the world he was going to talk to her right now. He went back to the interview, and then when it was over, he noticed he had a voicemail from her. Whatever it was she wanted to say, he was certain he didn’t want to hear it.

Yet, he had a bad feeling about why she might be calling. She hadn’t called him in a while, not since the second fake pregnancy. Either she was up to something again, or whatever was going wrong was really bad.

Case decided to listen to her message and see what she had to say. Immediately, he realized something awful had happened. Sarah was sobbing.

“Oh, my god! Case, call me. There’s been an accident on set. I’m not there today, but I got a call from someone who is. It’s Andrea…. Please—call me back!”

Case’s heart stopped beating in his chest, and he felt like he couldn’t breathe. He reminded himself that Sarah was likely up to something, and whatever was going on, Andrea was fine. Still, he had to be sure. He walked over to his garage and took a seat on a stool in the corner, calming pressing Andrea’s name and waiting for her to pick up the phone.

She didn’t. After he called a few more times, he decided to try Kelsey. He had her number, just in case Andrea was busy and he needed her in an emergency.

Kelsey didn’t answer either. He was trying to decide who to call next when his phone began to ring. It was Sarah.

“You all right?” Charlie asked, walking by with his crew chief, Mason Atler.

“I... don’t know,” Case admitted. Sarah says something’s wrong with Andrea. I can’t get her. I hope she’s all right.

“You can’t trust Sarah,” Charlie reminded him.

“I know.” Still, he decided to take Sarah’s call. “Hello?”

“Oh, Case! Thank God! Listen, there’s been an awful accident on set. Andrea was filming that scene when she gets pushed off of the boat into a vat of water. Things didn’t go how they were supposed to. One of my friends from the set just called. It’s bad, Case. It’s really bad!”

Case felt his stomach up in his throat. Even though he didn’t trust her, the idea that something could’ve happened to Andrea made him want to vomit. “What do you mean by bad?”

“I know they’re taking her by ambulance to the hospital, but from what my friend said, there’s no point, Case. I hate to be the one to tell you this, Case, but… Andrea’s dead!”

The words didn’t quite register as Case felt the world start to spin. He continued to take deep breaths. “What do you…. Sarah, how do you know that?”

“My friend said she saw what happened. The scuba diver was trying to get to her, but he couldn’t, and she got hung up under this boat that was floating in the water. I don’t know the details, but I’m so sorry to be the one to have to say it to you, Case. But my sister is dead—before I even got a chance to be a part of her family!” Sarah started bawling in his ear, continuing to blubber on about how she wished she had been kinder to Andrea when she had a chance.

Unable to believe it, Case said, “Sarah, calm down. Let me… I’ll call you back, okay?”

“Case, please, listen to me. I know how you felt about Andrea, but please, remember that I love you. I’m here for you in this trying time.”

“Thanks, Sarah.” He didn’t know what else he was supposed to say, so he dropped his phone and met Charlie’s eyes.

“What’s going on?” Charlie asked. “All the color’s drained from your face.”

“Sarah says… Andrea’s dead.

“What!” Charlie exclaimed. “No way! What… what happened? How does she know?”

“It’s all sketchy, but until I get a hold of her….” He ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

“Can you call her parents?”

“Not yet. I don’t want to alarm them, not when I’m going off of Sarah’s word. It’s not worth a dollar of Monopoly money.”

“Good point. Gosh, Case. Surely Sarah’s just pullin’ one of her games.”

“God, I hope so. But if this is some sort of sick joke, Sarah’s gonna pay for it.”

Charlie nodded, and Case lifted his phone again to try Andrea one more time. She had to answer soon—or he was getting on his plane and heading to California to see for himself.
