Chapter 195 Antics Ensue
“Son of a b*tch!” Andrea muttered, watching Rhonda plummet backward into the pond. Thankfully, it wasn’t deep there, and the woman landed on her bottom in the water. She must not have been expecting that, though, because she yelped as if it really did hurt when she hit the ground. Then, she started splashing around furiously.
“Help! Help! I’m drowning, and Andrea Sparks won’t save me!”
“Ms. Meyer, the water’s only a few inches deep,” Andrea said, walking over to where she was floundering. “Stop splashing.”
“I can’t breathe!” she said. Her head was almost three feet above the water.
Andrea didn’t want to get her new sandals all muddy over this bit of ridiculousness, but she could hardly let it seem as if she was ignoring Case’s mom while she was in the pond, so she kicked her shoes off and walked over.
The water was warm, but the squishy mud squirted up between her toes. She hoped there weren’t any snakes or bullfrogs right here. “Let me help you up,” she said, offering her hand. She prayed Rhonda wouldn’t find a way to pull her down into the water.
“Help! She’s trying to drown me! She’s trying to hold me under!” Rhonda shouted.
“I’m extending my hand to help you out,” Andrea said, calmly.
“Is everything okay?” Jill came rushing over, running across the yard.
“She pushed me into the pond!” Rhonda shouted. “Please, help me! She’s going to drown me!”
Jill looked confused, but she walked over and took Rhonda by the hand, the water barely covering her ankles. She looked down at her white sneakers, and Andrea could tell she was upset that her shoes were ruined. She’d have to make sure she got some new ones.
Rhonda stood and made her way out of the pond, algae and other debris sticking to her clothes and wound through her bleach blonde hair. She looked ridiculous as she sucked in air, as if she’d actually been underwater. Andrea didn’t appreciate it, considering she’d almost drowned herself not long ago.
“Are you all right now?” Jill asked.
“Yes, thank you. Will you call the police? I want her arrested!” She pointed at Andrea with all the drama of a soap opera actress.
Jill raised an eyebrow at her. “She jumped in, thinking she could blackmail me into not marrying Case,” Andrea explained. “Thank you, Jill. I’ll see that your shoes are replaced. What size do you wear?”
“Oh, uh, seven, thank you.” Jill looked at Ms. Meyer one more time and then headed into the house, drying her wet hands on her apron.
Andrea looked at Rhonda and shook her head. Of all of the ridiculous schemes the woman had pulled, this was by far the craziest…. She picked up her phone and her shoes and headed toward the house.
“You just wait!” Rhonda shouted. “You just wait until Case sees what you did! I have it all on my phone recorder tape!”
Andrea bit back a laugh at the strange way Rhonda described the video recorder on her phone. “Okay,” she said, not even looking back over her shoulder. The quicker she got away from the woman, the better. She stopped the recording on her own phone, certain she’d caught the entire conversation. Who knows what Rhonda would show Case, but she wasn’t worried at all that Case would believe his mother’s antics, even if Andrea didn’t have footage to prove the woman was lying.
Andrea walked into the kitchen to find Jill putting on a fresh apron. “I’m really sorry about that,” she said.
“It’s not your fault,” the other woman said with a shrug. “She’s so… strange.”
“I know. She just really doesn’t like me.”
“Why not? You’re nice to everyone,” Jill noted.
That made Andrea smile. “Thank you. I try to be. She just liked Case’s ex-girlfriend better than me, I guess.”
“Well, that’s too bad. I think the two of you are lovely together.”
Andrea smiled and thanked her but then she saw Rhonda headed back across the lawn and decided she needed to go to the bedroom where she wouldn’t have to see her anymore.
She was almost to the stairs when Rhonda made it to the kitchen door, already barking orders at Jill to get her a towel and go turn on the shower for her. Something told Andrea she wouldn’t be the only one who’d be happy to see Rhonda leave.
