Chapter 150 A Shocking Update
Sitting in her chair, waiting for her next scene, Andrea was reading a script out of the stack she’d gotten recently, thanks to the award she’d won. Being nominated had gotten a lot of interest from different producers, but now that she was actually a winner, she was even more in demand. It was exciting to see she had so many interesting parts to choose from.
Location and duration were just as important to her as the role itself at the moment because she wanted to make sure she’d be done filming by the time the NASCAR season ended. She wanted to be with Case as much as possible while he wasn’t racing. She also wanted to make sure that she had weekends off so she could go see him as much as possible.
One script in particular caught her attention. The producer had approached her about playing the lead, a woman who immigrated to the US from Poland right before WWII. The part seemed very interesting to Andrea. It was a strong female lead, the historical aspect seemed compelling, and the production wasn’t that large, which should mean shooting time shouldn’t take too long. It seemed like a good choice, and Andrea was giving it serious consideration.
Her attention was taken away from the script, though, when she heard a male voice saying her name over her shoulder. She knew who it was before she even turned around, and her breath caught in her throat. She turned to see Officer Gonzalez standing behind her. He was alone, which was odd.
Andrea stood and turned around. “Hello, Officer. I wasn’t expecting to see you.”
He gave her a half-smile. “I know. I’m sorry. Can I speak to you in private for a few moments?”
With a nod, Andrea followed him away from where anyone else could hear. Her heart was thumping in her chest as she contemplated what he might want. “Is everything all right? Where’s Office Buress?”
“She has the day off today. I wanted to come and talk to you as soon as I could. An indictment has come down, and I thought you should know what’s going on.”
A lump had formed in her throat, and Andrea couldn’t swallow around it. “An indictment?”
The officer nodded. “Yes. It’s Cam. He’s been indicted for the murder of Jan Hoegert.”
Andrea’s eyes bulged. “Cam? What? Why….”
“The district attorney has enough evidence to charge him with Jan’s murder, as well as being an accessory to your attempted murder.”
“Wh—what?” Andrea stammered. Her knees felt week, and Andrea thought she might fall over at any second. “Why would he want me dead?”
Officer Gonzalez shook his head. “That, I can’t say. We don’t believe he was acting alone, but there is no proof to tie anyone else to the crime at the moment. We will continue our investigation. It is possible we might find something, anything, that ties… someone else to the attempt. But… in the meantime, that’s where we are. I wanted to let you know before you heard about it on the news.”
Able to swallow now, Andrea, said, “Thank you very much, Officer. I do appreciate you letting me know in person.”
“Certainly,” he said with a nod. “I hope everything ends up going well for you, Miss Sparks. You deserve to have some good luck.” He gave her a small smile and turned to go. Andrea tried not to read too much into that, and decided to just let it go, especially since the news that Cam was involved with Jan in trying to kill her—and that he was now accused of killing the man who’d tried to drown her—was almost impossible to believe.
“Is everything okay?” Kelsey asked, coming up behind her. She put her hands on each of Andrea’s arms, and the actress let herself sink into her friend.
“Uh… no. Cam’s been charged with Jan’s death. Officer Gonzalez said they believe he was also involved with Jan in trying to… kill me.”
“What?” Kelsey said, her voice conveying the shock Andrea was feeling.
“Yeah. I know. It’s unbelievable, isn’t it? Why would Cam want to murder me?”
“I have no idea.” Kelsey took in a deep breath and slowly let it out. “Why don’t you come and sit down?” she suggested.
Thinking that was a good idea, Andrea walked with Kelsey back to her chair. She’d need to call Case as soon as she got a chance so that he heard it from her and not the news, as Officer Gonzalez had said, but for now, she just needed to concentrate on breathing. It didn’t seem real that Cam could be involved in any of this.
Across the sound stage, Andrea became aware that Sarah was watching her. When she looked over in her half-sister’s direction, she saw the narrowed eyes, the scowl, the pursed lips, before Sarah looked away.
Did she also have something to do with this? Andrea had suspected so, but Officer Gonzalez said he couldn’t prove it. Maybe he would find out that Cam had gotten caught up with Sarah, and she really was behind it. To Andrea, that would be unforgiveable.
