Chapter 131 Kindness Goes a Long Way

The conversation Andrea was having with Sarah seemed to take forever, but Case couldn’t blame Andrea for asking a lot of questions. The amount of money Sarah was asking for--$200,000—was nothing to sneeze at, so before Andrea agreed, she wanted to know exactly what Sarah had done, what she was accused of, and how long it would take her to pay the money back.

She didn’t just hand it over, though. Andrea was too smart for that. Instead, she’d gone through a lawyer and a bail bondsman, transferring the money in a way that would be traceable and making sure Sarah signed that she would pay her back, how she’d pay her back, and when she’d pay her back. Then, she’d made sure Sarah realized she’d have to go back to jail if she didn’t pay the money on time.

Once Andrea was done with the phone calls to Sarah and with the lawyers and everyone else, she hung up, looking exhausted.

Case handed her a glass of cold sweet tea, and Andrea took a sip. It seemed to revitalize her some. So much for the two of them having a relaxing day together. “So… what did she do?”

“She cut the safety wire that held Gordon’s tire to the car and loosened all of the lug nuts. They have her on film doing it. I spoke to her lawyer, and he said she’s going to have to plead guilty, but he hopes he can get them down to a lesser plea, because what they’re holding her on now is enough to put her away for years or maybe even get her the death penalty.”

“The death penalty?” Case could hardly believe his ears. “What in the world are they charging her with?”

“They really threw the book at her. The district attorney says she could’ve potentially killed not only Gordo but any and all of the other drivers and any and all of the spectators.”

“So… they’re charging her with hundreds of counts of attempted murder?”

“No, she said they were charging her with attempted murder of Gordo but also some sort of terrorism count for trying to kill all of those other people.”

“Seriously?” Case shook his head, dumbfounded. “They can’t actually expect that to stick, can they?”

“Her lawyer didn’t think so, but they won’t know for a few weeks. It might have to go to a grand jury.”

He couldn’t believe any of this was real. He’d always known Sarah would stoop lower than a lot of people would to get what she wanted, but he never would’ve imagined she could get herself into this kind of trouble.

Putting his arm around Andrea, he pulled her against his chest. “You’re such a good person, Andrea. I don’t know how you manage to forgive her time and again, but the fact that you’re willing to help her shows who the bigger person is.”

“I just want all of this behind us. I don’t want to have to worry about what she’s going to do next.” Andrea snuggled against him, and Case kissed her head. “Even if I never see any of that money again, I’ll be happy if it ends all of this.”

“I know you will be. Me, too. I’d love to see her actually pay it all back, but if it just makes her go away, that works for me.”

Andrea let out a sigh, and it broke Case’s heart. He wished he could do something to make her feel better, but all he could do is pray that this was it, and Sarah would finally stop all of her shenanigans. Andrea didn’t deserve to have to deal with this. She was a good person, a wonderful person.

He was thankful that he’d managed to get out of Sarah’s web and had ended up with someone like Andrea, someone so kind, she’d do anything for anyone.

But he wasn’t free of Sarah yet either, and he wouldn’t be as long as she continued to mess with Andrea at every turn and couldn’t accept the fact that Case was never going to be her boyfriend again.

“What do you want to do now that we’ve gotten all of that out of the way?” Andrea asked, her voice tired.

He had no question about what he wanted to do. “Let’s go back to bed.”

She giggled, and he scooped her up and carried her up the stairs.
