Chapter 179 Getting the News

Case woke up feeling unsettled, though he had no idea why. He checked the clock on his nightstand and saw it was only a little past seven in the morning. He didn’t have to be up for another hour, but he definitely couldn’t go back to sleep. He felt like something was wrong.

When he saw he had several missed calls and a voice mail from Andrea, his blood started pumping through his veins as he imagined all of the horrible things that might’ve happened to her. He didn’t even listen to her message. Instead, he called her right away. As soon as he heard her voice, he relaxed slightly, glad she was at least able to speak to him. But he knew something terrible must’ve happened for her to call him in the middle of the night. “Andrea? What’s going on?”

“Oh, Case! It’s so good to finally hear your voice. Last night, Cam broke into my apartment with a gun.”

“Oh, my God! Are you okay, Andrea?” He could hardly believe what he was hearing. His breath staggered in his chest, a lump forming in his chest.

“I’m okay, but he shot Kelsey. She was trying to protect me, and he shot her. I think she’ll be okay, but she’s still in surgery.”

“Poor Kelsey,” Case said, thinking of the girl who did so much to help Andrea at every turn. “What happened with Cam? Did the police catch him?”

“Rick was there. He shot Cam. He’s dead.”

“Dead?” It was hard to believe. The man who’d tried to kill Andrea three times—once by putting metal slivers in her coffee, the second by paying Sven to try to drown her, and now by trying to shoot her—was dead. He’d never stand trial for killing the hitman he’d paid to take Andrea out or for arranging for the assassin to attempt to drown her, but it was obvious to Case, especially now, that Cam had been behind all of that.

“Yes. Rick and Kelsey had been out together. They came in just as Cam was about to shoot me. Kelsey jumped in the way, and Rick drew his gun and shot Cam.”

“Wow. I’m so glad you’re okay, Andrea. Thank God Rick came in when he did.” Andrea had mentioned to Case earlier in the week that Rick and Kelsey were dating, so that didn’t surprise him. It seemed pointless to mention now that he wished Andrea had kept a bodyguard with her full-time. “Where are you now?”

“I’m at the hospital, waiting for Kelsey’s surgery to be over with. Case, I’m not sure I’m going to be able to come to your house this weekend. I know the plane is supposed to leave in a couple of hours, but I’m not sure I can leave Kelsey.”

“I understand if you can’t come.” He tried not to sound too disappointed, especially since he and Shayna had come up with a great plan for his proposal, and her family would also be there later that day. He’d come up with something else, though, if she decided to stay with her friend.

“I’ll let you know as soon as her surgery is over.”

“Okay. Is anyone there with you?”

“Rick is here,” she replied. That made him feel better.

“I bet you’re exhausted.” Case felt so bad for her and wished he could be there. “Do you need me to come out?”

“No, no. It’s okay. You have a race to think about. I’ll be all right.”

“I’ll miss the race if I need to.” He meant it, too. She was the most important thing in the world to him.

“I’ll be all right.” She sounded confident. “As awful as it was to see Case’s body lying on my living room floor, at least they got him, and I won’t have to worry about him coming after me again.”

“Yes, the whole thing is terrible. But you’re safe now.” He prayed no one else would ever try to hurt her again.

“Case, I miss you so much. I can’t wait to see you. It might not be today, but it will be soon.”

“It will be. I want to take you in my arms and never let you go!” He knew he’d be seeing a lot more of her now that her move was finished. Though he didn’t want to wait another day or two to see her, the promise that they’d be together soon was something to hang on to.

They both said they loved each other again and then hung up. It was hard for Case to not be there with her when she was going through such a hard time, but he understood that she would be more upset if he flew out there to be with her because she would feel bad about him missing his obligations at the race track.

Case leaned back on his pillow and looked up at the ceiling, trying to absorb everything that had happened. “Thank God Andrea’s safe,” he said. If anything ever happened to her, he didn’t know what he’d do.
