Chapter 176 That's Not Thunder
The last day on set was surreal. It was hard for Andrea to believe it was all coming to an end. When she’d signed on to make this movie so many months ago, she never would’ve dreamed everything that had transpired would’ve gone on. But here she was, finally wrapping up, with a different director, the other one having been arraigned recently on charges for murdering the man he’d apparently paid to try to murder her.
Wilma wasn’t any happier on the last day of shooting than she had been the entire time she’d been in charge of production. “We’re going to stay here all night if that’s what it takes to get this scene right!” she shouted.
Andrea tried not to roll her eyes. She wanted to get this scene over with because it was the last one. Then, she’d be free from Wilma. If she had any choice in the matter, she’d never work with this woman again for as long as she was an actress. Now that she was an award winner, chances were she’d have a little bit of say.
Seeing Kelsey and Rick together at least brought a smile to Andrea’s face while she was waiting for the set to be reconfigured for the final scene. The two of them had been spending an awful lot of time together recently, and it made Andrea happy to see it. As she was waiting, Kelsey came over and stood behind her.
“Hey, Andrea, do you mind if Rick and I go out to dinner tonight? Do you have anything you need me to do at home?”
“No, that’s fine. You two go ahead. I don’t have anything at all that I can think of that needs to be done.” Andrea smiled at her, so glad to see her friend so happy.
“Thanks,” Kelsey said. “I don’t know how late we’ll be out. There’s a band playing at Drifters that he wants to see.”
“Take your time. I’ll be so tired after this shoot, I’ll go home and drop like a fly,” Andrea replied. She wasn’t headed to Charlotte until the next morning because she knew Wilma would keep them there so late, she wouldn’t want to fly over in the middle of the night.
“Awesome, thank you so much!” Kelsey said.
“Please! You deserve it.” Andrea smiled and patted her hand and then went back to the script that she was practicing for the next movie. Even though filming was months away, she wanted to be ready.
Wilma was relentless, making them do the same scene over and over again. By the time she was finally happy with what the team had produced, the time was past ten. Andrea had let Kelsey and Rick leave hours ago. She still had her other two bodyguards with her, but she was just going to go home and go to bed anyway, so she didn’t really need them for anything. They rode with her home but then she had the driver take them to their own houses.
Andrea walked into her quiet apartment and smiled. She was exhausted, but it was over. Thank God! Having eaten dinner on set, she wasn’t even hungry. She sent Case a text to let him know she was home and was going to take a shower and go to bed.
She wasn’t in the shower long. She wanted to call Case before she went to bed. After she put on some clean pajamas, she headed to her room, but then she realized she heard a rumbling in the distance. It was thunder.
Her first instinct was to freak out! She took some deep breaths though and tried to remember what Case had explained to her when she was scared during that storm at the race track. It wasn’t her fault her uncle had died. She was perfectly safe inside her own home.
Another odd noise got her attention. It didn’t sound like thunder, though. It sounded like something else—something ominous.
Carefully, Andrea climbed out of her bed, picking up her phone and unlocking it so she could call 911 if she needed to. What was that noise? Was it the door opening? Hadn’t she locked it? Maybe it was Kelsey coming home. But she had a key—and she hadn’t heard the jingle of a key. Just what sounded like the popping of a lock.
She opened her bedroom door and took a few cautious steps toward the living room. It was dark and hard to see. But then she made out a sinister form. A man with a gun. Pointed right at her.
