Chapter 14

The other party shot back quick, [No need, Mr. Neville. I'm swamped. Don't want a dime of your stuff. Nothing left to chat about. Sorry for the hassle.]

His so-called wife didn't want any of his property. Leopold found that kinda funny. If he remembered right, she was only twenty-one. Wasn't she in college and needing cash?

Henry had been gone a while. Why'd she pick now to split?

Leopold thought back. Agnes was also 21 when she started fooling around with different guys. Kids these days, always restless. Why did his so-called wife want to divorce him?

[Got someone you like?] If so, he'd sign the divorce papers.

He usually didn't drag his feet, but when it came to his wife, Leopold felt a bit guilty. He was always buried in work and only gave her a title.

This marriage was just for show.

Plus, his wife didn't seem to care about the title. She was always low-key. Three years had passed, and the same few people knew he was married.

This time, she took three minutes to reply, and it was a long one. [Yes, but Mr. Neville, don't worry. In the past three years, I've never betray you. Even if I like someone, I've kept my distance from him. So, Mr. Neville, please sign the papers and let us be together?]

She didn't have anyone she liked. Even if she did, it was in the past.

Now, she said this just to get him to sign the papers fast. After all, a gentleman would help others find happiness.

After sending Leopold a couple of messages, Agnes started to get annoyed. Why was Leopold so slow? It was just signing a divorce paper. He was dragging it out like he had feelings for her.

But thinking it over, she realized she was likely the most magnanimous wife. Her husband kept changing lovers, and she never cared. Any other woman would've fought with Leopold long ago.

Thinking of this, Agnes kinda got why Leopold was dragging his feet.

Finally, Leopold agreed, [Alright, but you gotta tell Grandpa first. If he's cool with it, I'll sign right away.]

After all, his grandpa set up this marriage.

His grandpa? Who was Leopold's grandpa? She didn't even know. When she married him, her dad handed her a marriage agreement and told her to sign it, saying, "You won't regret marrying him." And that was it.

Where was she supposed to find his grandpa?

Agnes: [That's your grandpa. Why don't you tell him yourself? Mr. Neville, you want me to be the bad guy? No way!]

Agnes sneered. This Leopold, six years older than her, was really annoying! He was as despicable as Grace!

Leopold played with his phone. His wife was definitely a brat with a bad temper. No one had ever dared to talk to him like that. Well, except for Agnes, who was even harsher!

He realized he was thinking about Agnes again, and it bugged him.

He had no interest in dealing with the young girl, so he shot back to his so-called wife, [Grandpa's in Beacon City. You can go there!]

Agnes cursed and almost chucked her phone! But she couldn't bring herself to smash it against the wall, so she tossed it onto the bed instead.

After a while, she shakily picked up her phone and shot back to Leopold, [Leopold, I hate you! I'll head to Beacon City tomorrow. If your grandpa doesn't agree to the divorce, I'm camping out at the Neville Villa and not leaving!]

[Suit yourself!] Leopold tossed his phone aside. He'd promised his grandpa not to divorce, but his wife hadn't agreed. If she really wanted out, she'd convince his grandpa. Simple as that. He didn't get why she was so mad.

His wife was such a brat! So stubborn!

Agnes was so mad she almost blacked out. She tried to calm herself down. "Chill, Agnes. That's your husband! You agreed to marry him. Don't lose it, don't lose it, calm down."

The divorce talk went nowhere, making Agnes even more irritable. She couldn't really go to Beacon City to find his grandpa, could she?

Agnes sighed all day. In the afternoon, Justin, covering his ears in frustration, said, "Agnes, what's up with you lately? Spill it! Are you hitting early menopause?"

Agnes shot Justin a dirty look. "I'm annoyed!" she snapped, annoyed by her crappy luck with Leopold!

"Annoyed about what? Tell us! We'll help you fix it!" As Justin finished, Clara and Bella quickly nodded in agreement.

Agnes was even more annoyed. What could she say? That her husband was Leopold, and she wanted a divorce, but Leopold didn't agree.

Thinking of this, Agnes let out a dry laugh. She didn't even have the marriage document. Without proof, if she told them this, they'd probably send her to a mental hospital to check if she had delusions!

After all, the other party was Leopold!

"How about this? I've got a party tonight. Wanna come and blow off some steam?" Justin remembered what his dad had mentioned in the morning. He'd initially refused, but if Agnes wanted to go, he could change his mind.

Agnes weakly nodded. Alright, maybe she was just too bummed from not going out for a while. A night out might help.

Bella had a classmate's birthday party, Clara had plans, and Jeremy was busy studying for his grad exams. So it was just her and Justin who were free.

Hearing it was a party, Agnes picked a red evening gown that Justin had chosen for her and slapped on some bright red lipstick.

When she saw the gown's style, she couldn't help but twitch her lips. A cool, backless dress just wasn't her style.

"Justin, are you seriously?" She didn't take the dress from the sales assistant and glared at Justin.

Justin grinned mischievously. "Tonight's party is full of business big shots. Dress up nice. If you catch the eye of a CEO, you can take him home."

Before he could finish, Justin got a kick in the leg. Agnes retracted her foot, grabbed the red dress, and went into the fitting room.

Fine, she'd wear it. It was no big deal.

A few minutes later, Justin exclaimed dramatically, staring at Agnes with wide eyes, "Agnes, this is the first time I feel like you're a woman!"

The fiery red, waist-hugging, backless, long evening gown wrapped around her graceful figure. She wasn't too thin or too fat; everything was just right.
